my exp with the yor and thalan

Hey all,

In the interests of being a well rounded player, ive stopped honing my skill on the drath and started to play the other races.  Ive been doing masochistic to keep the game easily winnable.  Ill keep you updated on my progress to illustrate the differences between the races, and to get comments on what I did wrong, what I could have done better etc.

Yor

My first match was as the yor.  After reading the vastly different accounts of the go bots, I gave it a try.

WOW!

The Yor get a 25% econ bldg right off the bat (only one buildable per planet), as well as a 20% 0 maint morale center.  They also get a great research bild that is only one buildable per planet.  In a typical game I do productoin planets, research planets, and econ (i do about 1 prod/research planet per 6 planets.  IE with 18 planets, 2 would be prod, 1 would be research).   With the Yor though I had to adjust fire.  Every planet got the research and econ bldg.  Id still specialize a few production planets, and eventually some research as the tech became available.  the econ planets i would fill out with stalks, and then as i traded for the tech, straight up banks.

The economy got off to a slow start but ended up kicking so much ass due to the stalks.  A stalk gives you pop AND morale..you would load up your planets, have them sit at 16k pop and watch the money roll in.  I had maybe 10k income there at the end which for me is insane.  The combo of my influence and super isolationist caused enemy fleets in my territory to become sitting ducks which I could snipe a my leisure.  Everyone hated me though, I spent the majority of the game at war with every other race.

My soldiers sucked all game, i neglected to research their racial soldier line till the end due to ignorance.

Was funny having the drengin on my side for a change (usually as the drath theyre one of the most challenging opponents on the board).  Other than that, a pretty easy win.

Thalan

Currently llosing a game with these guys...My strategy in all games is for an early military rush, and then i never stop.  With the Thalans im getting KILLED because I simply dont have the population to keep up with the t ransports that I need.  I have a monster military (thalans can produce like no other) but just cant take their planets.  My homeworld is the only one who has the pop to do it.  Im about to start over.  Any suggestions on how to use  your first three galactic achievements?

Im wondering if, since these guys have the tech which just gets more efficient with time, if Im supposed to wait ou tthe early game, and then strike later one when Im mor efficient.  How do you guys win with Thalan?

I'm no Thalan expert, but for your question on what to do with the first three galactic achievements, I have three options for you:

  1. You could use all three of them to creat one super-powerful planet (usually players tend to put all three on Thala).
  2. You could disperse them amongst your different colonies, matching achievements with what you want the colonies to excel at.
  3. You could wait awhile and just put them all on the best PQ world that you get.

I normally build them all on my capital planet and just have that planet be super-strong. I always recommend that you build the Hyperion Matrix (or whatever it's called) on your capital planet. That is probably one of the most powerful achievements that you can build in the game - it gives you incredible bonuses and it doesn't take long to build.

As for if you should wait to attack or not - I usually do tend to wait until I've had the chance to get some decent soldiering - sometimes with a huge military I can just threaten someone to give me a good soldiering tech, but not usually. The Thalan do tend to have a major deficit in soldiering abilities, which is a pity because they have great tech and the capacity to pump out ship after ship.

Like I said - I'm by far not an expert on Thalans, but I thought I would just give you a few ideas. Good luck with the game and Best Regards.

another question.

how do you rush out colony ships as thalan?  we get no industry tech..i can only use my original wonder thing which gets me in th emid 20's, thats a 7 turn colony ship build

I'm not sure if this is really a strategy, but I usually try and get some good industry techs from the other races. Yes, I know most of the colony race is probably over by then, but I manage OK. As for getting an early jump on the colony rush, I usually just let the fact that it takes about 7 turns per colony ship be a fact. I don't play at quite the level of difficulty as you (Tough is my best), but usually 7 turns beats the amount of time it takes for the AI to naturally build colony ships.

The only real strategy I can think of to combat the colony rush requires a bit of micromanagement, but here it is: If it doesn't take more then 10 turns for your planet to pump out 1 colony ship, rush buy or lease it when it's about 3 or 4 turns from being finished. This helps cut down on the time it takes to produce them, but you better have a decent income to support the purchases/leases. If you don't, you had better get some good econ. techs, and a few farm/population growth techs wouldn't hurt either.

That's about the best advice that I personally can give on the Thalan's colony rush. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me - if I have some knowledge of the answer, I'll let you know, but if I don't, I know some guys who probably do have your answer. Best Regards.

I would disagree with putting the matrix on your homeworls, you're just setting yourself up for a morale problem down the road. Instead, pick a high-PQ planet and turn it into a second homeworld - even better if it has bonus tiles or an ethical event. The other two go on your homeworld.

For colonies, your best bet is natural building. Get enough miniturization to fit a colony module on a tiny hull, then spam them. Secondary colony production is even more important for Thalans than others; the delay from building ships instead of buying gives even a low-pop planet the ability to send out colonies. Once the planet hits 1 billion, it's time to start sending out colonies of its own.

You might want to get the first level of manufacturing when it's time to start building a military, just be very careful where you place them. Start on the 300% bonuses, then add more when you get level 2 or 3. If you can buy factories from someone else, even better. Certainly buy labs from someone else, the thalan tier 3 buildings are inferior to research academies.

Why oh why don't the Yor have Advanced Troop Mod or any government in its tech tree!?
