Defense bonus for ships in orbit

What's the defense bonus for ships in orbit?

In DA first mission, the AI repeatedly builds Defender ships with 0 attack and 0 defense and puts them in orbit.  How does this help them?

A 0 attack, 0 defense ship would force you to build ships with guns, rather than just rushing planets with transports.

There isn't one.

There is a 25% bonus to attack for ships in orbit.

There is a 1% bonus to both attack and defense for all ships, for all races, even in the absence of any other bonuses, that doesn't show up anywhere (not even in the stats and graphs screen).

I believe these stack additively, but I forgot to check on that.

Also, Alan is correct.

But it is really silly to keep wasting money on such ships when I have an attack ship parked permanently outside their planet.  The AI should save the money and rush build an attack ship to quickly get rid of my ship.  At least they have a better chance of survival.

I digress, but is it useful to build large ships with plenty of defenses and no attack?  This ship will absorb the damage and hopefully survive 300 rounds to win by default.

While your ship is busy blowing up the empty ships, it's not somewhere else.  Another one of their planets might be cranking out that attack ship, or they're calling in one from outside sensor range.  Or you might be up against a low-level AI that doesn't have a weapon tech yet.

As for large ships with a ton of defense and no attack, they're dead meat.  Defenses get worn down in later versions, and in earlier versions they can simply roll low.  All it takes is one guy with a screwdriver to eventually take apart your unarmed, if well protected, ship.

No.

The tie rule relies on attack, so that ship would actually lose.
