What does asterix mean?

I am now playing Twilight and I noticed during a trading of techs session that one or two of the races had a tech that has an asterix by it. Like WAR ROOM? So, what does this mean when a race has an asterix by one of it's techs?

And can I trade for it and get the unique tech myself? I mean I did trade and I got it in my tech tree now, but, does that mean I get the benefits from it or is it just in name only?

You get the benefits (unlocked ship components, structures, passive bonuses) but cannot continue researching along that tech line like the civ the tech "belongs" to. You have to wait until they research the next tech, and buy that, too.

If I'm playing the Thalans, I can buy Manufacturing Centers from the Terrans. I get the Manufacturing Centers and the starbase module associated with that tech. I do NOT get to research Industrial Sectors on my own.

That's pretty kewl, but, I'm finding the ai too easily is letting go of it's unique techs.

I also see Stardock and Froggy never fixed the back door of information from all races and what they are researching next. If you goto STATS and then MISL tab you can see what each race is researching and how long until it is researhed. Watching this every turn you can then sell them or trade them the tech and make a profit on it before they get to it by 1 or 2 turns (my choice). Or you can rush tech up in ones you see they are going for and then do the same thing sell it for profit. I often wondered why they never attached this to espionage or spying as it's some very important information and easily exploited. I can keep my economy in the positive while not having the economic buildings to do it just by trading off these techs to all the ai's.  I have 100% production all the time and low taxes and negative income because I can easily stay ahead of cost just trading/selling techs to the ai's. One thing I noticed they/he did do was make it so you can't talk to the ai races EVERY turn anymore. But, that really isn't hurting me as I still make enough trades to maintain a higher income from this than my own economy produces.
