When I enter battles, sometimes the combat viewer opens to show me the battle, and sometimes the battle occurs just on the main map. It seems sporadic, any reason why this would happen?

this is because of options, you can change that behavior

Check the options; you likely have it set to only show the viewer when both sides are fleets.
