Upgrading multiple ships

I've been looking for the instructions on how to do this, but can't find it. The game manual says I can, but I can't figure it out. I can upgrade one ship at a time by double clicking it and selecting "upgrade", but I want to upgrade all of them at once. How do I do that?

there's a check box in the ship ugrade screen to "upgrade all ships of the same type" or something close to it.
