Why are preset ships much better??

Hello,

I have aquired enough technology to have the Destructor Mark 12.  Nonetheless, I wanted to make my own combination of weapons.  I received a great surprise when I realized that ready-made ships are at least TWICE as powerfull in both attack and defense capabilities than user made ships.  Does any one know why this happens??

Thanks

The auto-designer does not account for the current level of miniaturization researched, and to my knowledge uses the maximum capable.  This is a bug and I believe it was fixed for 1.99; either that or planned for 2.0.

1.99rc.016 is the most recent beta; 1.96.027 is the most recent non-beta.

You can download the beta by clicking the blue orb in the upper left corner in Impulse and selecting Show prerelease versions.  If you're using SDC, you won't be able to access the beta, but when 2.0 is available, you will be able to use SDC to download it.

Did you guys notice that it only adds Beam weapons and not missles or mass drivers

The game I just played I had acheived, thru research and trade, missles that were three complete levels above what my beams were. The computer would only use lasers and not the missles.......strange. If I got a new tech in beam the comp would immediately say 'new design available' but not with missles and mass drivers.

I think if you adjust the slider when you hit focus in the shipyard it'll fix that.

Hmmmmm. Where is the focus button and the sliders? I cant seem to locate them

The Focus button is at the bottom of the shipyrad screen and is only active when auto-design is toggled on.  It'll open up your sliders to decide what your automatically generated designs should focus on.

For me, the exact opposite happens. Maybe someone can explain to me why?

All the premade ship designs have a reach of 0.1 units, but if I recreate the EXACT model myself I get 0.2 units of reach!

I don't add a support module or an engine, just weapons and armor.

Why?

I was wondering this myself. Maybe it just doesn't show up as a stat (part of the bug that allows the comp to do it in the first place). No matter how advanced the model of ship is it still shows as 0.1. I know it has some kind of life support module cuz I can see it on the screen.....weird.

The global bonus you get from researching speed or live support techs doesn't show up in the ship screen.

For example, a ship without engines and Warp Drive research (+10 from Impulse, +10 from Warp) will show speed 1 in the shipyard, but on-map will have speed 3.

I have been playing with 1.99 lately and apparently this bug is fixed. :-D
