Fuming about Endless Universe

I've bought Endless Universe last week and I'm not exactly pleased.

I've previously purchased GalCivII, Dark Avatar and Twilight of Arnor. So why did I purchase Endless Universe you may wonder? Because I'd never heard of it and I read and believed the back of the box (which is very explicit):

Endless Universe builds on the epic story, following on from Dark Avatar and Twilight of Arnor.

Its simply not true. Endless Universe does not follow on from those two expansion packs - since it is those expansion packs. Nowhere on the box does it say this though. The text on the back of the box isn't ambiguous - its just plain untrue.

AFAIK this was pointed out to Kalypso before they released it (they said the same in their press releases), and they failed to revise the wording.

Hopefully if they hear from their customers as well as us (definitely let them know you're unhappy about this), they'll update the packaging as they should and make things right with you guys. Unfortunately we really can't do much alone but complain to them, since they are the ones responsible for GC2EU's packaging and marketing.

Yet another Kalypso victim. Personally, I got burned by two other products they publish / distribute, so I simply won't buy from them anymore. (Same with Morphicon, btw)

I'm honestly very happy with this product as it gave me the chance to have a hard copy of the two expansions in Australasia.

I also saw the "following on from" part and originally thought this was an expansion, but actually did some very very quick research and found out that it wasnt.

IMO its probably a problem with the english translation on the box or something and was meant to be "following on with".

Yet saying that, i can understand if you purchased it in store on an impulse that you would trust it was an actual expansion. I was lucky enough to be familiar enough with www.galciv2.com that i knew stardock hadnt made another expansion.

Refund possible from the purchase store? Probably not, but oh well.:annoyed:

This seems to be a regular misperception.  I've seen several (admittedly console-centric) gaming blogs refer to it as a new expansion to the series.  I realize that, in certain circles, it's probably hard to get coverage for niche PC-only titles at all.  Coverage that is factually incorrect probably complicates things further.

I suspect that part of the problem is that many gaming blogs/magazines get much of their factual information from the same very few sources.  It may be worth contacting the authors of the incorrect writeups and asking them candidly where they got their Endless Universe information from.  Track it down to the source(s) and correct it there.  This may not help much for disappointed purchasers of this product, but might be useful for streamlining future press releases.  If the gaming press is taking their Stardock product info from somewhere other than Stardock's official press releases, track down those other sources and correct them too.

The info in this case is coming straight from Kalypso, as GC2EU is a Kalypso release. The interpretations the press have made are no more or less than the same anyone would just by reading the box. As above, they've been notified that they need to remedy this misleading description, but they as yet have not.
