A modding question

could someone tell me where i could find a program or two i could use to make ship models for GC2? Or one i could use to change a .mod or other file type to the .x file type?

Pretty much any advice for modding in ships to GC2 would be appreciated. i read the tutorial, and guide, but it seemed more complex then i could understand
