AI stuck on friendly

In the game I'm playing all the AI races (7 out of nine) have all been stuck on 'friendly' at the diplomacy screen for a couple of years now. Every chance I get to speak to them I gift them cash and/or trade with them. I have trade routes extablished with most. It has never taken this long for not even one of the AI to to be at 'close relations'. I am playing one level above normal difficulty.  Any ideas?

You may be lacking in one value or another. Like military power or one of the others! Check the relationship screen and note where your minuses (--) are with each race and where your positives (++) are. If it's pretty even in pluses and minuses, then it will take a long time to get "close."

Try giving a ship or planet (low PQ) to the AI.

You can never gift your way to Close relations.

You can (+) for the following conditions:

Trading

Treaties (++)

Diplomacy Skill

Military Power (+ or ++)

Historic Friendship (after 5 game years I believe)

Pacifist (this one is very rare, you'll notice most AIs get the - Militaristic)

Past Aid

Share Ethical Alignment

Not quickly for sure, but I thought that Historic Friendship was in part driven by past gifts, and Past Aid as well?

To get "Historic Friendship" you have to I believe its 5 years of no warfare between you and that race (not an easy task in GalCiv)

For "Past Aid" you have to give them aid when they ask for it without asking for anything in return (so if the Torians come to you asking for you to help, and you give them 100BC in exchange for a tech, that will not count. That is considered a Trade. It has to be selfless)

Keep in mind too, that even though gifts can get you TO friendly and not beyond (as the others have already said), it is just one aspect of your relationship.  That is, once you give some gifts you will still have to grow in other areas to get better relations.

Well, the full range of details is still obviously escaping me, but I can say with some confidence that your military rating is The Other Area. Nothing I've managed to observe in my own games has had a stronger effect on moving up relations with a civ I've not attacked.

Hey I noticed something.

I built a Spin Control Center for the first time. Two of the races switched to close immediately after I put ship where it was built. I read the description. How are good ways to put it to use?

Does the SCC affect diplomacy that much?

The SCC affects diplomacy indirectly.  What it does is multiply the number of ships that "appear" to be in orbit by 5.  So if you were to have a battleship with a attack rating of 50, the AI thinks that you have SIX of those.   This gives you the appearance of having a strong military.  And since your military might is a major consideration (though not the only one) when other races are dealing with you, well you've basically just did a slight of hand trick.

The SCC is one of the best structures in the game.  I neglected it for a while too, but it is a pretty vital improvement to build.  The enormous jump in mil rating is an incredible help to your diplomacy.  The AIs have a lot more respect for your power when your military rating jumps by 4-5X!  In the early game I fill the SCC planet with cargo hulls maxed out with nothing but weapons.  Later on I have huge hulled ships with maxed out weapons.  Psionic beam (at least in DL/DA) is especially good for this in the early stages.

Don't you mean "FIVE of those?" Or do you need to say somethjing more complicated that "multiply...by 5?"

p.s. What I noticed KP typing as I typed made me feel obliged to call out the SCC as cheese that stinks in a way I don't like; and I like the occasional bit of Stilton. Small-map claptrap, mutter-mutter-mutter...

I read somewhere this was a ploy to beef up military, I tried it. It was neat to see my military rating on the 'Stats and Graphs' screen skyrocket as compared to others.

Hmmmm, but to me this seems like a flaw in the AI, is it not. Shouldn'y the AI recognize the ship has one hp? How would Cargo hulls fare in combat with one hp even though they got buku weapons? Anybody ever try it?

@GWS: yeah, i went to Public School- i blame them for my poor math skills :-p

@LZ: it actually does take into account HP, thats how mil rating is figured. its (HP+Attack+Defense) {{there's more to the formula, but no need to go into it here}} ; so you would actually get a much higher rating with some huge hulls.  As for battle, i have won a few now and then with my Tigers; though its mostly if I have te Super Warrior ability, and Luck.  Those def. help.

HP does matter, but weapons matter more. :)  That's why later in the game I use huge hulls rather than cargo for both more wapons & HP.

If these paper-tiger ships can kill an enemy ship in one shot they will be the victor, because there cant be a tie, & the ship with the most weapons win.

GW, yes it is pretty cheesy, no arguments there!
