Massive brownish brick fog of war

Is it intended or am I picky?

This game seems absolutely amazing, so I decided to give the Galciv 2: Gold demo a go before purchase, but there seems to be a graphical glitch that I'm unable so solve and I've spent the whole day trying to fix it.

I've got an Intel E2140@3GHz, ATI 3850 running Vista SP1 32-bit (a week old fresh reinstall). I'm using the latest drivers, 8.9, which I've tried reinstalling as well as the 8.10 RC2 beta drivers, but still I'm getting the awful brown brick fog of war. I've fiddled around with the Catalyst Control Center settings (factory resets, you name it), but still no go.

I am assuming this brown brick thing isn't intented but indeed a graphical error?

Help appreciated!

(Attempting to attach a screenshot, I hope it works)

You haven't done any exploring, and it looks like you zoomed WAY out ... put the mouse over the map and play with the wheel, see what happens.

Yeah, it is zoomed way out. Still, is it really supposed to look like a huge brown brick then? It looks a bit odd to me. Maybe then I've tried to fix something which isn't broken, for the whole day. :P Oh well, if so, I think I can get used to it! :)

As you send ships out into the fog, more and more of the map will look like the area around your home planet. It's intended.
