Mystery Over Animating Components

According to the documentation, you should be able to animate components in the ship designer.  How do you do this?  Are only certain parts able to be animated, and if so, which ones?  Is there a special mounting that must be used for the animation?  If so, what is it?  I added a "saucer" shaped structure and wanted it to rotate, but it does nothing regardless of which axis I specify for it to rotate around.  I have dismantled default ship designs that have rotating parts (generally, colony ships) and tried using them as a basis for an animated model, but the animated components stop moving as soon as I import them.

What am I doing wrong?  The manual is of no help in this matter, and I saw nothing on the forum.

Make sure the animation is not paused (there's a play/pause button right by the size slider), and that they're enabled in the video options.

In addition the slider below the Axis selection is in a stopped position by default. Make sure your adjusting that as well.
