5 Noob TA Questions

  1. Do advanced warp bubble projectors go well with an extra engine on the bubble holder? If your bubble ship in a fleet is the slowest ship (say he has a speed of one), is the bubble projector just going to make the fleet go two faster than his, slowest ship. In our example, would the fleet just go a speed of 3?
  2. What exactly is research focus? I make the decisions for what is researched, so how does the focus change anything?
  3. In this game, playing the Krynn (my TA first, and really liking it) I have ships that inexplicably go 2 speed w\o an engine. I can see no indication that I bought a speed characteristic when choosing traits. Not 100% sure. Is there some way to find out why I'm so fast?  (Really liking that, too.)
  4. Another thing about this game is that I got these weird core ships called Pheonix M3's. They rock, but make zero sense in terms of their components to abilities, or the fact that the components don't actuall fit the hull they are on. They have a weapon without a name that is Plasma class: beam/size 8/damage 3 that takes up no space and has no effect on the beam damage to begin with or when I remove it. They also have two superior deflectors that also take up no space and do nothing to the ship. Then they have 4 laser mark III guns that should not have fit on the small/basic minituriztion hull when they first appeared. When I tried to just put the guns on a small hull myself, no going. Is this some sort of impossible gift from the Krynn deity with mysterius vestigal appendages or what? Very odd. Nice to have without the research*_* , but I just wonder if anyone has an explanation.
  5. What are techs with astrixes? You see them on trade screens. Do I want them? Are they specific to certain races or ethical alignments or both?

Well that's a start. Any response are well appreciated.

1. yes, your fleet is ALWAYS only as fast as your slowest ship

2. it will add more points per turn toward a tech your are researching. Say a tech costs 500 research points, if you change your focus away from military or social to research and get 5 more of those sheilds things u see for that particular planet, u earn 5 points more per turn toward said research

3. are these the ships u start with? Krynn start with Hyperdrive as one of their starting techs, that could be it.

4. there is a known bug where the auto-ship designer can hold more things then a human created ship. this will be address in 2.0

5.the techs with the asterisks * are race specific techs. if you trade for one you will get that specific tech but not the whole line to research later. I always try and trade for those depending on the situation cuz u cant research them your self.

hope this helps

1.) yup, what LedZeg said

2.) Focus diverts (in DA I believe its 1/3, in TA 1/4) to the selected field.  That is, at 100% production, on 100% social production, a world producing 100 hammers, with focus on Research would be 0 Mil, 75 Social Production, 25 Research; even though it doesn't have a single lab.

3.) You can gain passive speed boosts (+1 to speed) once you research certain technologies (Impulse, Warp, Hyperwarp, etc).  A ship, with no engine techs researched, with no engines will have a speed of 1. A ship with a single Hyperdrive engine will have a speed of 2.  All races starting ships should have at least a starting speed of 2.

4.) Yeah, its a bug thats getting worked on.

5.)Like LedZeg said those are race specific techs that only that race can research.  Generally speaking, you want to trade for these techs if you can as they often have passive bonuses that are quite useful or provide an unique structure that can prove to be beneficial.

Anything else we can help you with?

Slight corrections:

2) Focus (within the planet/colony screen) takes a portion of your funded production and channels it into other funded (or unfunded) production.  This is a way to get, say, research production without actually funding research.  You'll notice if you have research at 100% funding, focusing on research has no effect whatsoever.  (In DL & DA, it takes 25% of the base funded production, truncated, and passes that value to the focused production.  In TA, it takes 25% but only passes 20%-or, to put it another way, it passes 80% of what it takes.  This makes production by focusing somewhat less efficient in TA, but it's not an insurmountable obstacle.)

3) In DL & DA, the default ship speed, with no engines, is 1.  In TA, the default ship speed, with no engines, is 2.

NOTE: Silverbeacher's reply was not up when I replied.

End of quote

Just to add to this, the TA Arceans have a -1 speed penalty, so their ships will move at the old DL/DA speeds.
