Infinite battle?

Say 2 ships were to fight with the following stats:

Ship 1:

Beam Weapon:1

Armor: 40

Ship 2:

Mass Driver: 1

Sheilds:  40

Would either ship eventually win?  Or would it be an infinite battle with neither able to overwhelm the other's defenses?

I believe that one ship would eventually win, as the strengh of the defences are picked from zero to the top number for each round of the battle, so getting a zero would cost the ship some hit points.

Suffice to say, it would be a very long battle...

I think there was some sort of max battle turns I think and the victor was the one with the highest stats...I think at least.

I've read somewhere that the max number of combat turns is 50, but that was in DA. It might have changed since then. I believe it was also implied that if the battle was not resolved by then, the two ships would simply seperate and th ecombat would end. I'm far from sure about this, though.

After 50 rounds of combat, the ship with the highest remaining hp "wins" and the other one is destroyed.

GCII does not have MAD (mutually assured destruction), nor does it have "ties", where both sides survive to fight again.

In such a situation, first-strike bonus ability (or simply attacking first) might come somehow handy! :annoyed:

No.

First strike super ability means your opponent doesn't fire back-but only if you destroy them in the first round of combat.  Since we're dealing with 1 firepower ships in this example, you'd need to be using cargo hulls, without hp modules-and so would your opponent.

Secondly, GCII does not do "attacking first", after DL (I believe DL in its entirety has the attack first system, but it may only be up to about 1.3-someone who still plays DL can enlighten me, and the rest of us).

Regardless of whoever "fires first", in GCII DA & TA (and possibly late DL, see above), the defender fires back even if they are destroyed in the first round of combat...except, as stated above, for the first strike super ability.

To recap: No.

I have heard second hand that after 50+ turns, ships start killing each other in one hit regardless (might be more turns in fleet combat).  If it's down to a duel, then I suppose that the usual tie-breaking rules apply.
