Woe is me.

I was playing a DL campaign, and was on track to have my best score ever.  Gigantic galaxy, and I had conquered about 90% of it.  Mop up duties on the Terrans and Arceans with the Yor and Korx as my allies.  I tried to save my game, and comp locked up.  I figured I just lost a few turns.  I went to bed and figured I would just wrap it up in the morning.  I booted her up, and started a new game whilst I ate breakfeast.  Then I went to load my last save and it was gone.  Not only had my game not saved, it erased the old save that was there!  My autosaves were of the new game I was farting around on.  I lost about 15 hours of my life. Woe is me.

I feel your pain.  Unrelated story, but somewhat similar.  I was playing Bauldur's gate 2, around 5th chapter and the save files somehow became corrupt.  Not knowing this, I started a new game and piddled around, overwriting auto saves and quick saves.  Ahhh The loss of hours of gaming!!!

One thing I like to do when saving games, is use at least two save slots for each and alternate which one I use, just in case something like that happens.  You'll still lose some of it, but not everything.

Lol. I alternate over three sometimes four...you just never know eh?

Massive sympathies to you iceonfire...having just recently finished BG2 after quitting out 7 years ago...chapter 5...ouch! I don't know if I could play again in a hurry. How far back was your next save? I think I had about eighty by the time I pwned the jonster.

Saving it in multiples is smart, but I do not like to go back after a "mistake"...  It feels like cheating to me, and I do not like to tempt myself.  But maybe now...
