A question about trading techs

So, I was wondering if I trade say universal translaters for laser V, would i still have to research l-lll laser techs before i could advance to higher laser tech?

I realise no civilization in there right mind would make this trade, but just a example

No, you won't have to research the lower techs.  This is a great way to leapfrog your research projects!

The only downside to leapfrogging sometimes though is if a tech has a passive bonus.  For example, the first engine in each bracket gives a speed bonus.  Even thoguh the last engine in the bracket is far better than the first, I still like to have that passive bonus.

So it's something to look at when trying to find ways to cut down time.  BTW getting all of those laser techs would be useful if you think about how you could turn around and sell it to all the other AI's and make money on them...

It's a little curious - there is an indirect benefit because you can then sell the low level laser techs. Even more strangely the AI will still pay for say Laser 2, evern if you've already sold them Laser 5. As long as they aren't in the same deal the AI doesn't seem to care.

I tend to end up picking up all the earlier techs eventually even if I do leapfrog them - they're just useful trade fodder.

your tech score is also higher when you don't leapfrog, though tech is a pretty peripherial contribution to your MV score.

I'll be interested to see if this behavior changes with Tech Brokering disabled. Seems like if there is no passive bonus associated with the tech and brokering is disabled, you'd need to be stupid to pay for a tech below one that you already have.

*snort*Only if you're talking about new rags that look old. Otherwise, that's an inventory thing, not tech.*chuckle*

Man, I want some frictionless clothing.  It would make getting undressed that much more easy ;)

You'd need some belts or suspenders or something to hold it up though.  Think about it....what holds socks on?  The elastic creates some pressure to the skin to increase the friction.  Loose that friction and your socks will fall down.  Pants and underwear....yeah.  Shirts would be fine since they are held on via head and arm holes.

Now getting dressed, think about that.  You's have to stick your fingers thru holes in the shirt and close up 2 fingers just to pick it up...just grabbing a shirt off the floor would keep slipping out of your hands.

If I build the Frictionless Clothing trade good next to a Fertility Clinic will I get a morale boost for the planet?

Those passive bonuses are vital, I never trade past one. I have considered trading better techs to the AI just so they won't get the bonus. I'm just guessing that they won't go backward on the tree.
