More newb starbase questions

Hi All,

I'm new to the game and the forum and have a few questions:

 

1) Economic Starbases - I know that these increase any trade routes running through their sphere of influence but, do you only get the benefit once per trade route/starbase, or can you build a chain of them along the route to maximise the profits?

2) Military Starbases - are these there to just enhance your ship/fleet combat or can they be built up to be a military force themselves? I've been toying with the idea of a ring of starbases around my planets to keep out unwanted guests. Is this feasable or would they be completley ineffective without the ships to support?

3) Resource starbases - When built on a resource do you have to have a planet within the starbases radius to get the benefits?

4) I'm currntly playing a game and have built a starbase on every Ascension crystal on the map and a counter is ticking down the weeks to Ascension. I seem to remember reading about it somewhere but I can't think what it achieves, is it just a victory? Whatever, the other races really don't like it :)

I'm playing TOA latest version.

1) You can build a chain of them to maximize profits.  The limitation is 4 per sector, you'll get a message refusing to build if you try to go over that.  You need to add the appropriate modules with constructors to make them effective.

2) Military starbases are not a force themselves.  They do draw attention and can be used to create a diversion for enemy forces, but they are strictly defensive and have limited ability to withstand attack.  They are effective in enhancing the potency of your warships in their area of effect.  You can stack them to multiply the effect, same limit of 4 per sector.  Again, you need to add the appropriate modules to make them do what you need them to.

3) Resource starbases provide civilization wide benefits and are not affected by influence.  They are critical in any game.  Add all the mining modules to them as soon as possible.  There are 7 mining modules total made available by the factory techs.  Some races can not fully upgrade mining starbases in TA.  As far as I'm concerned, these races are worthless because fully upgraded resource starbases have such a significant effect on your civilization's abilities.

4) It's solely a victory condition.  The other races don't like it when you start getting close and relations shown in the foriegn stats window will reflect that.
