Acsension Victory???

I am playing a game where I have turned the Acsension victory on for the first time.
A message box at the top left saying Drath victory in 999 turns……..ok, no big deal, I get that.
How many crystals do you need to have a starbase on? When I looked around the only race that had a crystal (some areas still had FOW) were the Drengin and there was no message box for them.
Also, about 10 turns later the Drath number went from 998 to 498!!! If you build a starbase on more that one crystal does it cut the time in half or something?
I’m a little confused. Any help is awesome.

My understanding is that in order to win an Ascension Victory you have to "mine" 1000 Ascension points. Each turn that you have a starbase on a crystal you get 1 point. On medium maps there are 6 ascension crystals (don't know if this increases on larger maps or not), so having more starbases means collecting more points. 1000 turns if you only have 1 crystal, 500 if you have two, 333 for three, and so on.

To add one point to what RhetoricalSun posted, the starbases on a crystal cannot get any upgrades to it what-so-ever. So a crystal can only ever bring in 1 point a week and the starbase cannot defend itself in any way.

Other than that slightly off-topic tidbit, RS hit the nail dead-on.

If thats true I wonder how the Drath went from 998 to 498 in the span of about 10 or so turns.

RS mentioned the reason why. If you only have 1 crystal in your possession, then you only bring in 1 point a turn. If you have 2 crystals in your possession, then you bring in 2 points a turn, etc etc.

Lets look at the numbers then. You caught the Drath on turn 2 of owning any crystals. They only held 1. So:

Turn 1: 1 crystal, 999 turns to go (1 point earned)
Turn 2: 1 crystal, 998 turns to go (2 points earned)
Turn 3: 2 crystals, 498 turns to go (4 points earned)

996 crystals to go, gaining 2 a turn means in 498 turns at this rate they will hit 1,000 earned.

The countdown doesn't show number of crystals needed, it only shows number of turns remaining at the current rate. Since the current rate doubled, thus the countdown clock got cut in half.

On the bright side, since they now own 2 crystals, they have a -- relations hit to all races. They are now more likely to get a war thrust upon them and loose those bases to a laser/missile/gun.

1 crystal nets you a - relations hit.
2 or more gets you a -- relations hit.

Lessons learned here:
-if you decide to go for an ascension victory, have the biggest military in the neighborhood so nobody attacks you that you don't want.
-if you are going for ascension and want more than 1, go for them all. If you are going to get a -- hit to all races, better make it worth your while.

I get it now. thanx.
I'm not going to go for it though, it really seems like a lot more work then any of the other ways to win. Besides, I really like exterminating much better
