That's what I call peacekeeping!!!

So the galactic event of the day is the appearance of the 'peacekeepers'.

At first I had the bizarre thought that these peacekeepers would be a good thing.  My military was running about half of everyone else's, and they were all at war with each other, so some big gunners cruising atound whacking their warships would be a big help, right?

So when some pairs of dreadnaughts appeared in my space and tried to whack my meager defense forces I was a little irritated, especially since their ships were clearly designed with my missile heavy approach in mind.  It would be challenging to deal with them without taking more losses than the Yor would be taking, since the Yor are beam happy and the peacekeepers didn't bother with shields.  But I managed to get rid of them fairly quickly.

Can't cross any borders though, since the AI didn't get rid of the ones in their territory, and they have grouped up into fleets of...FIFTEEN dreadnaughts!!!  Ooooookay....logistics of 269 will do that for ya.  Maybe if I race past and lead them into Yor space the Yor will have to deal with them.

Nope.  They won't chase.  They just blow up things within range.  Okay, fine.  I'll stay here, they can keep vaporizing Alterian ships as fast as they get launched.  Maybe I'll hit the turn button three hundred times and transcend.  But wait...

A fleet of fifteen dreadnaughts crossed the border and proceeded to fly the length of my trade route, blasting little tradeships, unarmed economy bases, and minor orbital garrisons, which of course didn't even scratch their paint.

Good thing these guys came along.  No telling what sort of havoc all those unarmed merchants were planning!

With my economy in shambles is it worth a couple hundred turns to develop a fleet of alternatively armed ships?

This is the number one reason why I play with "Mega Events" off. If they weren't so game crippling I'd give them a shot.

As for your question of whether or not to build alternatively armed ships, that's really up to you. Personally, I'd keep on playing just to see if I could beat them. If you have the time and desire to do so, go for it. If you'd have more fun restarting, then do that instead.

I have to smile that my (mostly) rhetorical question drew an answer from 'RhetoricalSun'!

I would have played it out, but was pressed into a reinstall instead by some issues of my own making. I needed to do the 1.96 upgrade anyway.

I leave mega events on even while I complain about them...the galaxy isn't a 'fair' place, and they seem to reflect that...three cheers for the Jagged Knife!!!

The problem with the "peacekeepers" is that their event text indicates they target ships outside your own borders... wtf are they doing blowing up my econ starbases?

Heck, they even attacked my planets! I'm lucky they don't have transports...

I really do wish stardock would fix the peacekeepers... over-entusiastic... tendancies. I've just spent the better part of SIX hours clearing peacekeepers from my territory alone. I would have just loaded a save, but for some reason none of them would work, and as it was a metaverse game that I'd already put several weeks into, I didn't really have a choice. :(

One thing you can do to make the berserk Peacekeepers work for you is to design super-fast transports, so that when the shield of defenders gets blasted from the AIs planets, you swoop in and take it, with no possibility of retribution. The AIs arent programmed to use a similar tactic, so your planets will be safe. :)

Now if only I hadn't already had the speed limit event. ARRGH!
