The Jagged Knife

Hello everyone. I've had this game for a day and have been playing it and am fairly satisfied with it. One thing happened today that kind of befuddled me, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if I could get some advice\answers from the experts.

I was playing today, and 'The Jagged Knife' "claimed" one of my planets. Ok, I didnt know who they were or how, but I realize they're a minor race, and that they sort usurp planets.

I guess my questions are:

1) Is there anyway to prevent them from happening? Or can they seize ANY planet in your empire? How about Earth(If you're the Terrans)
2) The Drengin declared war on the Jagged Knife, so I thought it an opportune time to demand my planet back. I did, and they accepted, except I don't have control of my planet, and it always just pops back into their planet list. Is this a bug?
3) Unrelated question - I find when I move my ships long distance so they're on "autopilot", they seem to lose a turn, as I've seen a ship sit there for a full turn and not move. What's the deal with this? Am I Missing something?

Thanks for any answers :)

1) Turn mega events off. Or just use them to get essentially "free" planets (as in not having to go to war with any of the big guys; they don't take planets from just you, you know).

And yes, they can take any of your planets.

2) What? I'm confused. You asked for a planet back from...the Drengin? The Jagged Knife? Elaborate, please?

3) As far as I remember, autopilot moves happen at the end of the turn (but before the next one), so you'll always see them at full moves on the next turn. On the first turn of an autopilot, it might not move, but I thought that bug was fixed.

Thanks Sole Soul. Sorry, I thought because my post was mainly about the Jagged Knife, and I said planet back that it would be clear - my mistake. I asked the Jagged Knife for my planet back, and they submitted. I also demanded a technology off them just now, and they agreed, but I don't have either.

They agreed?

Interesting.

I can't get them to give up anything.

Then again, it's an impromptu game in a tiny galaxy where they only have two planets. (Giving them planets allows them sufficient planetary variety for them to allow me to buy them again.)

How many did they take total?

Did you DEMAND it from them, or did you offer to pay them for it? Very very rarely will the AI accept demands, and only if you're in an extremely dominating position. As the JK gets all of everyone's techs that it steals, the only dominant position possible is military might.

Just for reference-before closing out the diplo screen, planets change sides. For instance, if I buy Kona from the Drengin, it'll disappear from their side and show up on my side before the window is closed. If it doesn't, then they probably refused me. If it does and THEN it doesn't show up as me owning it in the galaxy, then that's a bug.

But I've just traded planets back and forth with the JK via the diplo screen for about 30 minutes with no problems in TA 1.96, so at least it looks like it's not the JK's fault.

Is it the turn immediately after you order them to move they're missing. If so, that's entirely normal. When you order the ship to move, it immediately moves as far as it can that turn, then goes on autopilot. The next turn, they start with all their movement points, but don't actually move until you push the turn button. If you don't know what's going on, it looks like they just sit there that first turn.

I recently had my most powerful Jagged Knife event. It was near the end of the game, and I was just in the points-building phase. So I had killed all the AIs except one, who was down to one planet. I had 505 planets and the Jagged Knife event happened, stealing 165 of my planets! I had no desire to play 4 more hours on a game that for all purposes had already been won for a while, so I reloaded an auto-save.

Sole Soul - Thanks for your replies. I demanded my planet back from the Jagged Knife and they agreed, but the planet went back into their list of planets. I later demanded my planet back again, and the same thing happened, then in the same diplo session I demanded a tech to see if the same thing would occur and it did - the tech I asked for went back into their list and I did not have it after the diplo session. I am playing on an easy level b\c this is my first game, so that could have something to do with them submitting to my demands.

Willythemailboy - thanks for your answer. I understand it now, just wasnt used to delegated travel orders being carried out like that in a turn-based game.

KzintiPatriarch - that sucks. I think a Jagged Knife event of that magnitude is a more than a huge annoyance. 505 planets? That's crazy ... I had no idea you could control that many planets in this game.

The game settings for that game were Dark Avatar ver 1.8g, huge map, all-abundant, and 8 minors (adding 8 nice planets). I also think it was a higher planet count than average for those settings. On a gigantic or immense all-abundant you would have even more planets, but I've never done it, because my system cant handle that much!

Jagged Knife is pretty rough, especially if it happens before you have transports. If you have transports you can usually retake your worlds pretty quick and just suffer the horrendous population hit from the invasions.

Jaggend Knife seems to take a proportion of all planets from every major - so the bigger you are, the harder you get hit.

Lots of mega events are just that - mega.

Wait til you experience pirates, spies everywhere, or some of the other ones that might be considered even more harsh.

In my last run in with them I didn't have transports yet and it was pretty early. I didn't have much military at all, but I did manage to retake my planets before JA built many ships. JA picked up steam quick though. Other races were getting frisky with me or declaring so I'd bribe the JA to attack them and they were wiping out enemy influence bases near me, freeing up resources for my constructors, and clearing out ships in orbit so my transports could invade. I can't say I minded the JA at all.
