Random events are not so random

Three games in a row I've got 'Jagged Knights' event. Not bad for me as a player, but crippling to AI. In previous games I had spies infestations. Again, few games in a row. I saw alignment shift for Yor and Altarians, and mass pirate menace, but only once each. What makes some events so popular that they re-appear again and again in consecutive games?

I'd say it has to do with your playing style. In my last game I encountered several events that all can be linked to my style of playing:

-Jagged Knife occurred after a long time of relative peace in my galaxy.
-Sudden extreme influence boost to another race occurred when I was busy constructing influence bases and pursuing the influence-track of the tech tree most of the time.
-Precursor ranger popped up after a number of abrupt war/peace alternations.

Some of the events might be truly random though, but I'd be surprised if playing style is not taken into account in determining which random events pop up.

The Jagged Knife event is triggered by a lack of transports. You'll notice you will never have any transports available when the event occurs. The other events are also triggered by certain "playing styles", but I'll let you figure which ones!!! Have fun, enjoy!

Now that you say it, it fits with my experience. There should be a more important random influence... imho

That is true for me so far. Although I think I had the tech because barely a month later I had taken one of their planets.

They are a terrorist organization that take control of some of your and everyone elses planets and thus form their own empire. They also get everyones tech. They don't get any ships initiately however, so if you want to spend your troops, you can retake your planets, and somebody elses as well. It is bloody work since they also have the top dogs soldering abilities as well. Homeworlds are susceptible to the takeover, morale of a planet seems to have no effect on choice it seems to be a truly random decision on what planets flip to the Edge. (in Trek terms, they are what you would consider the Orion Syndicate.)

I had noticed this even as far back as DL. Events that Empire mates would get almost every game I wouldn't see for months at a time. Only after drastically altering my play style did I start to see more of the events I had been missing. Makes it a good idea to shake up how you play every now and then :)

I guess if you play the same style over and over, you can start predicting these events and incorporating them in your strategy :P.

If they were truly 'random events', you wouldn't have to do that!

I know, I was jokingly trying to find an upside to these not-so-random events :P.

In my experience it was when the evil races where way too dominant on the map.

Well that explains why I haven't seen them since evil never dominates my maps. GOOD TRIUMPHS!

They never were intended to be. All the events in this thread are 'Mega Events', designed with the purpose to shake the game up if the player seems to be winning too easily.

That's also why you can choose them to be on or off during galaxy setup - unlike the true random events.

I had the "Pirates From Hell" Mega event last night!!! It was gross, BUT the pirate ships looked kool! I attacked one of the pirate fleets with my best battle fleet and took out four pirate ships before they killed my fleet. There were still five pirate ships left in the fleet. I only have two more fleets left and will lose just about every base I have on the map as the pirates were all placed near my trade ships and bases. There are over fourty fleets and many more individual ships. THIS GAME is OVER!!! I had to reload a previous save to continue the game. The event is skewed and needs to be brought into balance with the game.

The pirate heavy fighters were
Attk: 294/0/0
Def: 17/79/39
The pirate frigate was
Attk: 588/0/0
Def: 71/118/118
The pirate fleet that was left after I destroyed four ships was
Attk: 1428/0/0
Def: 105/295/196
My fleet that was destroyed
Attk: 330/501/80
Def: 528/546/546

That's just insane!

Yeah. Lets assume that the Major Races are the most advanced races in the galaxy. How do a bunch of pirates get a hold on stuff that is above and beyond any of the Major Races. Another dimension? They found a bunch of ancient ass-kicking hardware? A god somewhere said 'merry x-mas' here are some bad ass ships? They won the lottery and bought them in another galaxy?

Even a fleet of Anorian Rangers couldn't take this fleet!!!

There needs to be a cap on the weapons for these ships. You can't have pirates that can destroy everything on the map???

I understand the event, BUT tone the ships down to a reasonable scale to at least be able to fight them. Just like the mini pirate event. You need to deal with them and still not risk losing your whole infrastructure in the process.

A simple concept. Pirates don't make money by destroying trade ships, they steal cargo! They lose sources of income when they run around destroying traders and eco bases. They do not openly seek out military outposts to engage then in combat, it cost money to do that. Sooooooooo rename them, BUT don't call them 'pirates.' Call them 'invaders from another galaxy' or some other title.

Holy Crap Batman! That is just........WRONG!!!!!!!

I see the liking of Federation ships on those screen shot.
I will pick up the bar tab for an entire weekend to anybody who can build me the 'Yamato' from Star Blazers.

Well, then I have no explanation why I have never seen them so far. as evil always dominates my maps.

Unfortunately I have only seen this event once so far in my very first Suicidal game back in DA. And I happened to have a million troop ships flying around - which made this event into a real winner for me.

well then, i'll see what i can do. it's an interesting design, though not my usual tastes, personally. i should warn you, however, that i have quite a magnificent liver and live in a fairly expensive town (San Diego, CA) :)

questions:
do you want this to be MV-compatible?
if so, what race ID would you like me to build it under, and what hull size?

MV = no
I favor the Krynn. Large is good.

I have tried several times to make the Yamato or the Andromeda from Star Blazers but............no dice. I totaly suck at the ship builder even though its my favorite feature. I can see all these cool designs in my head but cant build them.
