Diplomatic problems

Is there a known bug about the relationship levels in Galciv 2? I've recently discovered that I cannot achieve a more than friendly relation with another race in Twilight of the Arnor. Even when playing without a mod, AI players keep telling me they've upgraded their level of trust but nothing shows up on the foreign affairs pannel. I've resorted to everything, from trade, morality, spying, giving away techs and money but nothing works!

Is there a patch of some sorts I should have downloaded a while ago or what am I doing wrong?

Hopefully you'll get some advice more relavent to TA than I can give you. But failing that here's my 2 cents.

Basically things like an alliance victory are about my least favorite victory but I have had occasion to play one and was struck by the difficulty getting from Friendly to Close so that I could offer an alliance.

Like you said once I got close I could do many things that would result in comments to the effect that our relationship has improved but nothing seemed to move the relationship from friendly to close. In the end it turned out to just be a matter of time. In my case 2 game years to be precise.

To be honest I had considerably abused this specific AI earlier in the game by killing all his ships and taking all his planets except one and I assume that had some effect on it but still two years does seem like a very long time to wait.

Darn. Can't edit reply #1. It should have been the following sentance.

"Like you said once I got friendly I could do many things that would result in comments to the effect that our relationship has improved but nothing seemed to move the relationship from friendly to close."

It's been quite a while, but I seem to remember someone pointing out that the move from friendly to close is a random event, much like flipping a planet. All you can really do is hold them at friendly and check every few turns. Sorry I can't be more specific, I can't remember who said it, or where  :NOTSURE:

You can't brown-nose your way to close relations (that would make an alliance victory far too easy, like it was in GC1).

You need to be at friendly, have more + modifiers than - modifiers with the race in question, and just wait. It will happen eventually.

It's going to be easier with races of the same alignment, that you have trade with, have never been at war with etc, and will always be a lot easier if you have the strongest military in the galaxy.

Note for TA only: If you are sitting on ascension crystals, this gives you a - modifer to relations with all races (-- if you have more than one).
