Oblivion in the face of a common enemy...

So here I was... Large Galaxy, Tough with 9 opponents and random minors. Everything abundant but stars. Got a nice map, 1/2 empty but a nice spine across the map. True to my "luck" of the draw, I'm in the dead corner again... I manage to get 7 planets or so going, highest my PQ10 HW. Actually held my own for a good while, and am just about ready to go after my weakend neighbor when I start noticing the Krynn going Influence happy.

Now, this isn't a new thing... the Krynn likes to do this alot actually. This game however, they start on the other side of the map. I can't help but notice (and salivate over) the lush PQ18, 19 and 22 worlds they got dealt, in addition to 8 more PQ5-15's. Funny part is, THAT'S not even the problem.

It's what happens next that truly makes me wonder what on God's green earth these races are thinking. It all starts with the Altarians, letting me know the influence of the Krynn is becoming an issue. Then the Terrans. Then the Drengin. Then the Korx. Every year it's "hey buddy... there growing mighty powerful over there..."

Now at this point, EVERYBODY and their Uncle knows who the problem is. So what do they do? Nothing. I watch every year 2 to 4 windows of this or that planet and this or that asteroid choosing to side with the Krynn. These guys are losing their collective shirts...

It's at this point I REALLY get bewildered. Instead of banding together against this common enemy, they start declaring war on each other. I couldn't beg borrow or steal a war against them. I couldn't get an ally to save any of our hides.

The whole galaxy goes up in a puff of Krynn smoke withing 20 years, and NOBODY tries to stop them. Well, I did... but come on... 7 crap worlds againt the galaxy? I never stood a chance...

I cannot believe this was "tough" difficulty AI set on maximise CPU. I thought (incorrectly, it appears) they would do SOMETHING. They recognized the problem just fine... guess they just all wanted to be Krynn afterall...

I can tell you one thing... The Krynn are the first to go from now on. Always. Count on it.

Hmm, an entire community ignoring the increasingly growing threat of a Jihadist movement resulting in no action leading to their destruction.

Why does this sound familiar?

That would be funny if it won't so true... ;)

Lol... for me it's always the Thalans.

I had a similar experience last game, the korath turned into rome and no-one wanted a bar of it. Fortunately I had enough resources to muster an few anti-korath fleets and got stuck into them... I had to laugh though when all the previously timid Ai's lobbed up to sink the boots once I had them on the ropes.

Bloody vultures.

Haha. I was going to make a post about this type of thing. The Super Race. Every game, one race becomes this unbelievably dominant powerhouse that is stronger in every category than all other races combined, and I play with 8 races. This race can fight simultaneous wars against every other empire and not only survive, but flourish. How the sweet F does a race have an economy 5 times better than mine when they have less planets, and i have a bit more population, and i have 2 maxed out econ resource bases. It's insane. They eat everyone up and yawn while doing it.

What ticks me is that ALL the other races just whine about it and do nothing...

They all should kick the race out of the federation as he/she has so many votes it's a "hey do what you want, who cares if it's good for anybody else".

They all should join together and put the race down.

Of course I'M the one doing the dominating, you know they'll all gang up on me, so why won't they do it to one of their own?

They're supposed to be smart, but end up coming off dumb as a box a rocks.

This is a serious game breaking issue for me that totally removes the chance of larger map sizes and in reading similar stories from others I know this is not an isolated thing.

Please Stardock... Please address this... Pretty please?

Same deal happened to me, I was just ranting about it in a bug thread. Same dea, the Krynn going culture happy and no one (but me) doing anything about it. But lucky for me the Krynn are all suffering from a degenerative brain disease because they can't wage a war to save their lives. Literally, because I'm slaughtering them with my flailing economy, weak science and the 3rd most powerful military in the galaxy (they're #1). The other AIs are worse I guess because as you say, they do nothing at all. The Krynn asked for peace a few times, but wouldn't give me anything for it. After I took half the map, I thought I could extort peace but now they won't even consider it for free.

I had a game with a powerful Krynn also. They were more upfront with thier conquest thou. I was playing as the Doomtubbies { Neutral Yor } and was allied with a race I made up for my 7 year old [The Frog Guys lead by Lord Kermit From the planet Muppetville} The Krynn were first in military, the Frogs were fourth And I was fifth. I never build ships intill someone asks for money or else, so I seemed harmless I guess. So when war came I said sure ,built 3 fleets of Corvettes [med hull equal att/def lead by a fleet battleship large hull with speed and def bonus and 2x sensor so the blind corvettes could see. It can be fun to watch fleets of 10 fighters with 10 att each run into fleets of 3 ships with def of 75+ and att of 75+. Needless to say I won They surrendered . Kermit appears pleased and my little boy is happy I saved his Frog empire. {the things I do to get time to use the computer}

AI Adjustments:
---------------

There area few races that tend to dominate. I have found that you can balance things out a bit by making some adjustments to each of their AI difficulties individually. You can either adjust some races up (which I prefer) or some down.

The Power houses (in my expereince):
- Thalan
- Arcean
- Terran

Theese 3 will adapt to any layout of galaxy or starting resourses. The other races tend to fall into line based on their starting locations. I cant comment on the Altarians as I always play that race (with pumped up economics, research and morale).

Cannon fodder:
- Iconian
- Torian

Theese 2 are always the first to get wiped out by the AI races in my expereince, usually followed the by the Yor, Drath, Drengin, Korx and Korath.

I typically play on tough and adjust the cannon fodder up to crippling or the power houses down to normal (depending on how ambitious im feeling).

Stacking the galaxy with war mongers will keep the AI's in fairly close competition also.

Diplomatic Tactics:
-------------------

I can usually get anyone to war anyone I want by aranging for one of the war mongers to attack someone allied to the race I would like to see attacked. Especially in the late game, a war declaration can plunge the entire galaxy into war. If you cant get someone to war someone directly, you can do it indirectly by creating a conflict between your enemies allies.

Once you have successfully plunged most of the galaxy into war, you can manipulate exactly who you want into fighting someone else by paying the people you dont want involved to make peace. With others out of the picture, the AI will consider the odds stacked against them and will be more willing to negotiate waring someone they wouldnt before.

Thats the general tactic; see what you can do with it.

In your game with the Krynn, you may have been able to get the AIs to war with the krynn by forming alliances with your fellow dominated AIs. First you make peace with the krynn; then you ally yourself with various AIs. When war breaks out with you and the krynn, your allies will be dragged along (especially if your allies have a smiliar ethical alignment).

I always play random enemies, and I invariably get stuck fighting the Drengin, the Korath, or both. One of them always becomes a super powerhouse. Only reason last game the Korath didn't become unstoppable was because the Thalan were so unbelievably powerful that they ate the korath for lunch. The Torians can be very bad ass also. Sometimes they start insane and drop off to nothing, but they can also keep being godly too.

I can't recall the Krynn ever being ridiculous. They're usually no joke, but never insanely powerful.
