metaverse no replacement for locally stored hall of fame

As much as I like the metaverse, I'd still like to see a local hall of fame similiar to that in Alpha Cenauri -keeping track of:
best scores with each starting party
highest social score, military score, etc
quickest victory
best scores for starting size

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I too much of a loner?

Yes, absolutely. This is one of the few things I don“t like about Galciv: No Hall of Fame.

The 2nd thing I am missing is a Civilopedia.

And the scoring system should put small and large maps on an equal footing. As it is, patience gives you more points than skill does. >:(

I sure agree being a mod lover myself. My website will hopefully have one in a short time for GC. It would be nice if stardock could come up with a way to allow modded games to be posted on a different metaverse. Until they do something CDG will take the lead for the Hall of Fame. Covering as many stats as possible, and allow the creation of Empires if it goes well as we plan. GC forums: http://www.cdgroup.org/forums/tbs/gc/ I knopw I another shameless plug for my site, we just opened about 10 days ago. Out of the love for the game, and to dedication & support for any mod designers who want their own forums for their work.

The 'pedia and tech improvements are coming in the expansion I believe (with hyperlinks like SMAC has if I understand it right).

I'd rather see the metaverse broken down into a list for each galaxy size, though that might be a bit cumbersome. The reason is that putting all the sizes together is an apples/oranges kind of thing: the strategies used to win on 'gigantic' aren't anywhere close to those used on 'tiny', so why lump the two together? Also having them broken into various sizes would allow people to focus on the map size they prefer best (i.e. Player XXX is known to dominate on small maps, Player YYY is the king of gigantic maps, etc.).

They could probably implement the various end-game value scores with the current system. Since a lot of data is stored when the game is submitted to the metaverse it's probably all there. There could be a toggle at the top of the metaverse page: sort by economic, sort by military, sort by tech, etc., to go along with the current 'sort by total score'.

Of course, it's easy to think of all these neat things to do when you don't actually have to do them yourself... ;)

I believe you should simply divide pop score/mapsize, so the inflated pop scores for large maps come down to a normal level. Maybe a simpler solution.

Perhaps some other parts of the score need to be divided by mapsize as well, depends on the equation.

I can even live with smaller maps giving a somewhat smaller score, but currently they add *nothing* (compared to gigantic maps). What tickles me most about this is that difficulty is irrelevant. Even a masochistic game on Tiny gives you practically nothing, score-wise.

And a simple game on Gigantic that *should* give you 130 pts or so gives you thousands. >:( >:(

I believe it is too hard to take into account all the things that occur to truly balance map size. None of the TBS games I know of did that. My top SMAC scores were always on the biggest map size. We can talk about size balancing, but I doubt there is truly a way to make it "even" One size will always be rewarded vs another no matter what you do. Too many variables. And that's not to mention the total squawwwwwk of those that played under the rules only to have them changed.

What I think the metaverse ought to do is just list the top players/empires on each map size. Then have "Most ruthless, the Adam smith economist award, and stuff like that across map sizes. Now that would be quite cool.

From what I hear. small is a totally different game from huge anyway which I think deserves its own rankings rather than one huge pool. They could do empires the same way. Why not have that? It probably would be somewhat of a pain for the devs but hey, they now have bux to burn and that's what they are here for eh? LOL

And I always thought there should be a system of ranks (lieutenant, commander that required wins at certain difficulties to advance. That would have been way cool. But then again, My world is one of unlimited bandwidth and server power. It happens not to be the world in which we actually live, unfortunately. (:( >:( :sniff!:

I still don't believe there is not a local Hall of Fame feature. I've been gaming since the 80's and have never seen a single-player game without one. So it must be me who is wrong and just cannot find that feature, right? It must be there...

Re: map sizes

So you think the guy who spends 3 hours on a tiny map deserves the same score as the guy who spends a week (or more) on a huge map?

I don't know where some of your guy's sense of fair play came from, but it's not the same universe as mine.

The population issue has already been nerfed, whatever map size differences that are still present in the game are because of actual game factors such as legitimate population (running up your pop for no purpose now penalises score), more techs researched, more ships in play, etc.

The metaverse is what it is: a carrot to get people to submit their games so the devs can see what needs improvement, that's it. You can make it into a competitive ladder if you want, but being number one isn't going to do you any good at all other than proving, yes, you are a gaming geek ;)

If people keep with the whining about trying to turn this game into a perfectly balanced strat game all we're going to be left with is a dry game of space chess.
