So this is old news as of just before the weekend. Chances are that since I got the message through the Penny Arcade site you might already know about it. You can find the comic on it here.

It is said that if you rant hard and long enough that not only will people stop listening to you they will go out of their way to shut you up. In this case the courts just want Miami lawyer Jack Thompson to shut up long enough so he can die.

In case you didn't know John Bruce "Jack" Thompson (born July 25, 1951) is a major activist against video games in the crazy christen front war. When he first began attacking companies like Rock Star multiple parents and politicians got behind him in an effort to stamp out the video game art form in nearly all areas. However after it became more and more apparent that not only was Jack a bit "off the reservation" even as christian conservatists were able to stomach he was getting into downright illegal acts of law. His extreme religious views put him on a crusade against the Florida Bar Assc. in 1992 because of their defending the rights of "gays, humanist, and liberal agendas". He has held to this campaign till present day. In May 2008, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dava Tunis, after reviewing 2,400 pages of transcripts and 1,700 pages of exhibits, recommended that Thompson be found guilty of 27 of the 31 violations of which he had been accused, including making false statements to tribunals, disparaging and humiliating litigants and other lawyers, and improperly practicing law outside of Florida. Then on June 4, 2008, Judge Tunis recommended 'enhanced disbarment' for Thompson. More here.

You can look up his wacky campaign all over but in the end you can boil it down to a few things. He wants his way based on extreme religious beliefs. He is willing to do whatever it takes to get them including violating the law, and attacking anyone in power that will not allow him to have his way in the end. I certainly hope this crack pot goes down in flames.

I had a comic ready for today but I would rather use comics from those more talented then myself since the subject is already been "comicked" to hell and back.

Okay. Has it occurred to you that wishing death and violence on anyone is just plain wrong. If anything, you are just helping to make his point by acting this way.

Now I too find some games disgusting and am astonished that people have such a low sense of morality to play them, especially GTA. That being said, I have nothing to do with this guy, who is clearly not a gamer and know nothing about what he is talking about. Personally, I don't know what anyone still listens to him or even bothers given him more publicity like you are doing. In fact, he has disappeared from all conventional media, it's only informal things like blogs, webcomics, and forums that are keeping his name alive at all, so you are really just helping the guy by posting this, as is Penny Arcade.

Oh all right. Just that my perspective goes like, -People see this news and know its his end and can feel safe now that the guy is gone for now.- But I guess neglecting his existence works better. lol

To clarify he is not disbarred yet. I didn't wish death on him, I just don't think he will survive this and I am not sorry to see him go.


However you are correct in that wishing death on him proves his point but not in the way he might say so. He might suggest that video games lead me to such violent thoughts. However I speak as someone who has had something dear to him threatened by someone who doesn’t understand it. I urge you to find someone that wouldn't have the first instinct of being very angry, or even violent. For instance when someone challenges his faith he threatens jail time, seizure of their assets, revoking their career, or worse. He also follows through in some cases. He is indeed a far more violent man than myself.

I should also mention that only the tiniest amount of info about his current on goings is said here. Just because he is out of the limelight doesn’t mean he isn't still on a crazy rampage.

Yeah, well, millions of people go on thier own little nutty rampages and almost all of them get ignored. He would be by now, the media certainly is ignoring him, but folks like you just won't let anyone forget about him. Thus creating the very problem you are upset about.

I mean there are nuts who has tried to crusade against just about everything and nobody gives them any publicity.

In this case I prefer to make an example of him. I have nothing against Christians or simple levels of morality in any way. On the other hand I don't like crazy jerks messing with my games or cheating the legal system for the sake of a crusade. We call them crusades these days more often than not because it is a bad idea. Call this attention I am giving him a focus on zealotry.

A Zealot is often defined as someone whom redoubles their efforts while losing sight of their goals. Don't be "that guy".

They disbar them.
