Suggestion/request regarding saving and loading

Several times now I have double-clicked on a game in the load/save menu, intentending to save the game, only to load one. Luckily so far I've only lost a couple of turns work through loading older versions of the same game.
It would be nice, however, if double clicking game names on this menu saved games instead of loading them. Most games have seperate save and load menus, and double clicking in the save on will save the game, hence my double clicking in this game.
It is far more disasterous for someone to lose progress by accidently loading a game than it is for someone to lose a few seconds by accidently saving one, especially as you get a confirm box when trying to overwrite games. An alternative, therefore, would be to have a pop-up confirmation for loading games. However, I feel that this would get more irritating, popping up every time, than it would be to just swap what double clicking in the save/load menu does.

I'm still fairly new to GC2.. and I know what you're talking about. I've also wondered why I can only save only a certain amount of games at any given time. I suppose I could just move the saved games to a different folder and keep them that way. Can you name your game saves?

I also found that it is best to close the game out and re run every so many hours. I have 1GB of memory and a large swap file..the sucker filled up and GC2 said it was saving the game because I ran out of memory but it didn't.

All in all it's a great game though!

Can you name your game saves?

Yes you can. You will need to go directly into the Directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\"Your Name"\My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

There you will see a number of " .sav " files - "AutoSave.sav" for example. Whatever name you give the file before the .sav extention will show up in the Load/Save screen.

So copy an existing .sav file, rename it to what you want (.sav as an extension is mandatory), and put it in the same Directory as the AutoSave.sav file. Do that as many times as you want for as many sav files as you prefer. They will all show up in the Load/Save screen.

Be aware that whatever you do, the game will always create a "AutoSave", QuickSave", and "PreviousAutoSave" .sav files, even if you delete them, the game will recreate them next time it runs.

That was a nasty one - drove me mad as well, as it zapped the current .sav file. They have nailed that one, so make sure you have the latest update.

By the same token, I really wish that this was done automatically for you, the way that Civilization IV, among many others, does -- by giving saved games a root name modified by the turn number (or date, or whatever), so that you can easily play and load several different games at the same time.

I mean, the early game has a different feel from the mid-game or the late game. Sometimes I might feel like playing through the heady colony rush phase of a game without having to finish the game I'm currently playing just so that I can start a new one; or maybe I might want to play as the Drengin without waiting to finish the game I'm currently playing as the Iconians.

If the game generated saves with names like [race-name]-[turn-number].sav, or, perhaps better still, [leader-name]-[galaxy-size]-[turn-number].sav, it would be easy to have several different in-progress games on your computer at any time without having to go to all the trouble of renaming the files yourself and hoping that you don't forget and accidentally overwrite that nearly-finished Gigantic military victory you've been working on for weeks.

(Another reason to have multiple games: My laptop can just barely play GC2; if I want to play really big galaxies on it, I can only really expect to play the starts of games on it before copying the save games over to my desktop to finish playing them)

If you want to save a game with name X, simply go to the load/save window, overtype the name at the top of the screen with 'X', and then click save.

Once you know the behaviour of the game dynamics, it should be no problem

Don't double-click, because it will load that saved game.

Be patient, and single click to the desired option.

Certainly I'll eventually get used to single clicking, but years of double-clicking have made it very difficult to kick the habit.
I also ask as a means to stop others from making the same mistake.
