Get through the ship designer quickly

...how do i...

While i think the ship design is a neat feature, i usually don't want to bother. But I simply cant figure out how to upgrade various designs with that new armor i just invented without having to refit the entire ship from scratch. Why cant i just automatically get durantium armor on all my different ship designs without having to do it manually with every single one?

I litterally sit there and have to memorize the previous stats for the ship, before i hit the upgrade button, because if i dont memorize them, i sometimes forget that the ship had maybe 4 parsecs/turn speed, and I really wanted it to keep it that way. Once i discover my error, i have to remove the new design and start over to make sure it retains its speed.

And i have had these troubles with the game from DL.

(and i want multiplayer. thats the only thing that will make the game be played for years to come for me - just like civ 4 is today. I still play civ 4 multiplayer almost every week, but never-ever galciv unless a new expansion just came out whichh will kinder my interest for a month or so.)

It sounds like you have it set to remove all functional equipment when you upgrade. You can change that in one of the options screens. What I usually do is click on only show functional equipment in the top right of the designer. That makes it easy to just right click the thumbnail for the components you want to remove along the top. Then just add the new ones in their place. You don't have to worry about losing your engines or weapons just for an armor upgrade that way.

I've looked at the options but I missed that one!

I believe the man said "WOOHOO!!!!!". I second the motion. Any opposed, no? Motion Passes.

This committee of "WOOHOO!!!!!" is hereby adjourned.

I was wondering about this too, the "upgrade" button didn't make much sense to me the way it works by default.

Thanks!

Oh, it's workable enough I think - if you have a ship design with a lot of bells and whistles, it keeps all your pylons and such where you want them, which in turn often makes it obvious where you wanted the engines and weapon placements - a *lot* less work than trying to recreate them each time.

Although, I think the default should be the other way, with perhaps a button to "Clear Functional elements" if you wanted to reset the design. At any rate, I definitely prefer this methodology - it's a lot easier to upgrade a specific part without resetting everything else where I *think* I had it last time -

If the ship designer in general seems like a waste of time to you (maybe you're in a rush), I think there's an option to automatically place components, as well. So I'm guessing you'd just double-click stuff you want to add and it'd find a sorta-cool place for it.

I've seen some pretty...interesting creations from the auto-designer. Ships with huge lasers strapped all over the hull, they look like somebody crazy glued a gigantic ball of cannons together and shoved a few engines into the mess for good measure :P.

They certainly do the trick in combat, though. PEW PEW PEW LASERS!
