Autoquit, game unplayable

no, seriously...not from a gameplay issue, I literally can't start a game

Whenever I start up TA, I can never start a game. When I go to load a save game, the box that usually has a little icon in it is blacked out, and if I click on it, I crash to desktop. When I try to start a new game, I get to the factions screen, and all but one or two of the faction boxes are blacked out as well. The ship preview is filled with blocky white squares. This lasts for a couple of seconds, and then the game crashes to desktop without ever giving me an error message.

Any ideas, solutions? I played this game up from Beta 3 and havn't had any problems of this magnitude with it until today.

Did you completely remove the beta, before installing the real TotA? I'm not sure thats it, but I've read if you don't do that, it will mess things up.
