Fog of War & Curiosity

So I have no doubt that this is going to seem silly, but I'm considering buying GalCivII and it's expansions, and there's one thing about the game (in the demo, at least), that's really bugging me more than it probably should.

I suspect, however, that it's one of those things that's easy as pie to mod, but I can't find it using the search...

That flesh-tone color of the Fog of War. I hate it. Can it be modded to a different color?

Erm, Fog of War usually looks like this in most games, do you want to make it blue or something?

There was a game, I think TA: Kingdoms, where there was an option to make the fog look like . . . . wait for it . . . . fog. Was pretty cool. Of course, TA:K in general was a flop, mostly because I think it was a bit buggy and had high system requirements so many just couldn't play it, had some good ideas though and I normally dislike RTS's.

I know that, of course, and yes, I want to make it blue or something.

I'd be surprised if this isn't really easy to do, if you know what the proper file is.

Well, call me surprised.

I expected this to be an easy question with an easy answer.

Four days have proved that wrong, I guess.

Nobody knows how to change the FOW color?

Boy, the useful replies just keep on a'comin'...

Thanks for bumping the thread, though.

Well, the fog colour is fixed, as far as I know. Maybe it's stored somewhere in a .dxpack, but I doubt it.

I would imagine the fog colour is fixed. I've never really had a problem with the colour as space games have been using that colour for fog of war for a while - earliest that springs to mind being Homeworld.

Its was the same dusty tone then as it was with the astroids that were mined (there is also the same colour tone similarity in GalCiv2 as well) so it wasn't a great leap to see it as dust and debris.

Though I can see an argument for using Nebula gas it doesnt really have the same universal aesthetic appeal or tradition of space dust.

I don't think changing the colour of the fog would be as simple as changing a value. The fog is dynamic and probably a great deal more complicated than it looks... though I could be wrong because I havent the first clue about the technical side of it.

That was a little helpful I hope. Though the temptation to make a post referencing Holly going on about grit on the scanner scope was incredibly high.

Well the thing about space is... your basic space colour... is its black... *bites tongue*

^_^

Well, thanks for the info.

Like I said, I just got the game, but I figured that something like that was probably a RGB value in some settings file, somewhere, and would be an easy fix.

I just figured I'd ask before tearing through all the files looking for an unknown value.

Oddly, after a few days of playing, it's not bugging me so bad. My wife still looks over and says, "ew", though, so it's not very pretty.

Well maybe I can help you out in a rather roundabout way.

Its not explicitly stated but the maximum sensor range on any given ship is 15 parsecs (please somebody correct me if im wrong - as far as i'm aware this is still correct)

As such I build a non military specialist sensor/survey ship which job is rather similar to a modern AWACS or other dedicated radar craft. Its my eyes and ears and 15 parsecs radius is quite large.

A sprinkling of these guys and nothing will ever sneak up on you ever again and as a side benefit, will basically remove fog of war from the map (within reason) Now that I think about it, playing without these ships would tend to make the fog of war annoying :)

Yep! Thank you.

I'm only a few turns into my first real game (I experimented a lot before jumping in), but I've already started building sensor craft based on the larger cargo hull, instead of tiny scouts. We seem to have the same mindset when it comes to sensors.

Nice looking ship, by the way. I'm still trying to get a handle on what all the ship pieces look like, so I can make more complex vessels. (Probably need to research more than just cargo and tiny hulls, too. ^_^)
