Tourism income - is there a bug ?

Hi everydody,

I'm a new player at this game: i downloaded the full game with the latest extension (twilight of arnor) yesterday and played it for the first time today. Great game by the way!

I'm new at this game but I'm an experimented player of other civilizations games so usually I understand tax, income mechanisms.... And in my first game, something really strange happened with the tourism income...

As a beginner I had a lot of problems to get money in the beginning of the game, forcing me to have a high tax rate and a low production rate. I tought I would loose this first game. But in early mid-game, a strange event happend: the tourism increased with a 10 factor from one turn to another !

I don't know exactly which "week"  it happened but I have 2 saved files from which I have those datas:

22 dec 2228

tax : 62% (approval 50%)

prod : 72%

tax income : 404 bc

trade income : 6 bc

tourism : 64 bc

total income : 474 bc

total costs : 473 bc

margin : + 1 bc

1 feb 2229

tax : 14% (approval 100%)

prod : 100%

tax income : 98 bc (i don't need tax anymore)

trade income : 11 bc

tourism : 1250 bc!!!

total income : 1359 bc

total costs : 603 bc

margin : +756 bc

So to summarize: due to this "miracle", from a difficult and challenging situation, the game started to be "almost" a piece of cake. Now I can (almost) buy everything I want. I don't see the interest anymore of doing trade routes (4bc for a basic road vs 1250bc from tourism), I don't have any problem of population approval, etc... A real loss for the challenge of managing my civilization.

My question is : is this a bug ? is this a special event I didn't noticed ? is this normal ? did this happened due to a specific research, building (in this case it seems to be too much powerful) ?

Quick notes:

- i didn't use any mod or cheat code

- the game level is "tough/intelligent"

- my girlfriend did a quick game just before me for a try and had exactly the same "problem" with tourism income. Coincidence ?

Thank you in advance for your help and your answers.

There certainly IS a tourism event that doubles the income. If you got that and the tourism doubling united planets vote without noticing it could produce a huge boost in tourism. I both happen to me in the same game, and I realized that I could run my empire at 100% production and a 0% tax rate. I literally could not go into debt, at least not without rush buying. This was back in Dark Avatar, so the maintenance wasn't as high.

Now that I think about it, the tourism event may have been a 4x boost. Stack that with the UP doubling the tourism, and the numbers your seeing start to make more sense. Also, tourism income scales with the number of people in the galaxy, so your tourism income goes up with everybody's population. If there's been a lot of colonization and population growth in your game you can see some pretty big increases in a year.

Hi George and thank you for your answer.
Ok, I'll pay more attention to that event next time. In fact I think it could have been a 10x boost. Really powerful.
I'm happy to hear that it's not a bug, and more happy to hear that is a special event and won't happen at each game (even if it solved all my money problems last time).
thanks again!

Just be careful when the event wears off and all of a sudden you're going massively into debt every turn  ;)

Also there's another event with improved economy which multiplies tax income, which is just as impactful as the tourism event.

By the way, since TA the key benefit of trade routes, rather than the small income they provide (nonetheless helpful on tiny maps), is the positive effect on your relations with the AI.

But you can also have a negative income on your tax and increased on your tourism.
There are sort of random mega events.

To stabalize your economy (it's even harder in TA then in DA) you really need to focus on your economy from your first turn on! Won't spoil anything so you can find it out yourself :-)

Goodluck!

PS. There is atm a bug/feature that will make tech inflate at an insane rate just anticipate on it and don't frown when everything costs 4 to 5 times as much as it did in your last save.

Thank you guys for your advices and quick answers.
I'll keep that in mind for future games.
