Crash, Crash, Crash,

Same old bugs

I just played my first TA game, and got to enjoy 6 crashes! I held off buying until the final release in the hope that the crashes of the DA version were fixed before it was released. Well, I am not happy to report that I paid more money for the same buggy game I had before.

In fainess, some of the changes are nice, I love how much faster the game is, but mostly, I was hoping for a game that does not crash!

Is that really that difficult to create?

Odd, I played the entire beta and had maybe a handful of crashes. If you have Vista, then there is already work in place to get it's stability in place (the game on Vista, not Vista itself...)

That is weird... I've been playing it for about 30-40 hours and haven't had one crash yet.

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on your game version:

Dread Lords, all versions:

strange... no crashes here... two Gigantic games, 10 mayor civs, and now one immense, 10 civs, no single crash.

Must be your system related. sorry. Post info, the guys here will help you for sure.

By the way, great game, and HUGE expansion. You should open something like a Games Developers University.

If DA was crashing for you, you should have definitely made sure those were addressed for you first before getting TA.  There may be some compatibility issue we're not aware of.

The only "crash" issue I'm awrae of in TA is the one with gravity accelerators.

That debug.err indicates the game was exited normally. We need one from when the game "crashed".

I crash almost every time I alt-tab out and go back into the game. I also get a wierd bug where my turn won't end.. the "turn" button in the lower right hand corner just won't show up.. it stays blank.

I am using Vista.. might have something to do with one or both issues.

Amazing game though.. it sucked away the last 3 days of my life!

If your turn button is not showing back up, you might check to see if you have any ships on 'auto-attack.' I've noticed that when I do, once the ship has made one attack, I have to hit the spacebar in order to get the ship to go to it's next action. This means, I sometimes have to use the spacebar frequently if I have several ships or fleets on 'auto-attack.' There may be other issues at work as well, but when in doubt I hit the spacebar and things start back up again.

Oh, I also forgot: The 'alt-tab' crash is a known issue. Either run the game in window mode and set it to your desktop resolution (that way it looks full screen and doesn't have those nasty windows borders) in order to alt-tab safely; or don't alt-tab

Yea, I've just been avoiding alt-tabbing

I never use auto attack.. I'm one of those micro management guys that likes to tell each thing exactly what to do every turn..

I did post my crash problems with DA along with other people on that thread, but the post was not answered. I will send an other error file when I play the game again. I assumed that the error file would only be created when an error was detected.

Just FYI, the debug.err is created fresh with every start of the game, and is written to at each stage of the game. So if a crash occurs it often will show up within the last few lines.

I've been having quite a few problems with crashing as well, more so than with DA.
A few times I've crashed when trying to place a spy on an enemy planet (the game crashes when I click on the planet with the 'spy' pointer), and I've also occasionally crashed when doing other things, such as accessing a particular screen on the civilization manager. It doesn't happen too often, but it sure is annoying when it does.

I also get the end turn bug a lot when I load an old auto-save (that is where the end turn button disappears completely).

I'll try and remember to post my debug next time it crashes

Did you do a clean install of the game, and have DL/DA also up to date? These would seem to indicate a problem with the tradewnd dxpack.

Prior to release I was seeing occasional crashes when trying to spy and I'm still seeing them in 1.91. April 25 I sent a saved game, debug.err, and SmartException capture to Cari Begle and gc2bugs@stardock.com.

If this has dropped off the radar I can send in a new report for 1.91.

I updated all the files that stardock central allowed me to download. So I guess that I am up to date. I did not install any of the beta versions, so I should only have the final version on my PC.

You might want to try removing and reinstalling then, just to be safe.

If this has dropped off the radar I can send in a new report for 1.91.


Others have reported spy crashes as well, so there should be enough reports in gc2bugs to investigate it.

For the record, I had this crash too on alt-tabbing - until I switched the game out of fullscreen mode. Now I can browse and play all I want, very stably. Try it, till the patch comes out.

I have reloaded all 3 games but am still getting some crashes. Here is the error file on my latest one. What can be done now to rectify the issue?


Unfortunately there's no common obvious error in the debugs you've posted. Please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to gc2bugs@stardock.com.

Include in/attached to the email:
+ A description of what you were doing at the time.
+ How to reproduce the crash (if possible).
+ A zipped save (if applicable).
+ The appropriate debug.err file.

The devs cannot help if you do not provide these details!

Kryo,
I finally had the chance to really play the game, but it kept crashing after I met another race. I have had this happen every time. It does not matter if it is a major or minor race. In the debug it the final line is an eval.

I am going to try a fresh install of everything if I can find DL Disk #2.

Another question is whether XP SP3 has any effect.
