How to: Big ships, small components

I haven't played this game in years but it used to be that you could just delete the sizemod entry on a component and then increase the size of a ship and you could then have massive ships with tons of components. However, when I tried just that, the size of my modded components sky rocketed. What is the current way to achieve this?
