Thanks, Kryo. That actually occurred to me also and I think I've resolved the problem. Basically, instead of doing the "Clear" procedure as instructed, I jotted down the settings for the custom characters, then left the GCII program and deleted all the raceconfig files associated with those races. Then I restarted the program and re-created the races. So far, I haven't had any problems with them now so I think the problem is solved, but if not, I'll send the files to you.
Thanks for your response. Oh, and just as an aside, re-creating the races probably would have been a little easier if there was a "Race Editor" along the lines of the other editors (hint, hint)
