Is there anyway to get the last shard without scrapping some of the starting ships? The Maintaince drives me crazy.

Yes, without telling you explicitly what to do, I'll just give you the hint to not worry about establishing ANY base of operation. Make this mission as quick as possible.

Actually i managed to do it by first growing enough pop to maintain the ships and then invading the yor. But i had to fight through masses of fleets of dreadlord ships and planets to get to the target planet cause it took so long. Had to do a lot of abuses though.

It's all about one 2000 troop transport and increasing ships range to get to that planet i.e. star bases. Don't bother fighting anyone but dread lord ships on your way. You can finish that mission in half an hour.

Ok I take it back, to which corner should I be heading? I went across to the far side corner diagonal to the start point but no planet to be found.

I then went down through the Yor and none of the planets there where the target.

Where should I build my chain too?

straight across.

it can be done in ~5 min (that's mostly pressing the turn button).

Effectively, it breaks down to 4 real actions, of which I won't post here. (sorry it's really a big spoiler for that map)

The Holy Grail points the way though.
