Questions about sliders

I have played GalCiv 1 & 2 for a while now and really enjoy them both. I must confess I have never really understood the sliders though and hope someone can enlighten me. I get the tax rate slider but it is the research, social and military ones I am confused about. For instance, if I set military to zero, does that mean I will never build a ship or just ones with weapons. Will constructors and colony pods still build or is it all considered military? I guess it would help if I knew what was connected to each slider. Is research only connected to new techs or does it apply to research buildings as well? Is social just for projects and buildings that improve morale and influence or does it also apply factories, economics buildings and starports? I think know what was connected with what would greatly assist me. I play vanilla GalCiv 2 with neither expansion. I generally play as the Terrans and occasionally as a custom race. Thank you all for your help. I really love this game.

Military slider is for ANYTHING built at a starport, be it a constructor, colony ship, or weapons vessel. If your slider is at zero, ignoring "Focus", you will never build a ship.

Social slider is for anything being built on your planets and in the build queue. If at zero, ignoring focus, you'll never build a building.

Research slider is for funding of your labs which translates to beakers, making you research your current tech faster. If set at zero, you guessed it, ignoring focus AND creativity/anomolies, you'll never research anything new.

Now, with focus, you can move things around. Meaning with zero slider on military, but lets say 100 percent on research, you can "Focus" production planet by planet to either build ships or buildings with the beakers you get from lab funding. But that starts to get complicated. The first 3 things up there should answer your questions.

Thank you for the quick reply and great answer.

Now I have a question about Focus. Is it possible, for example, to set military and research sliders to zero, social to 100 and build all factories, using the focus button to build ships when needed and to research when needed or is that oversimplifying things?

Thank you.

You can do that, yes, there's even a strategy based on that. If you search the forums for "All factories strategy" you'll find it :)

You can, yes. Thats basically the "All-Factory" strategy. In a nutshell it allows for a lot of production, but little research.

You can also do all labs, and put slider at 100 research, but that takes a little more skill as it gets REALLY expensive to maintain and balance

We'll expect updates :P

I prefer just to play regularly :) It puts me at a disadvantage and I'll never win against a Suicidal enemy, but to use 'All-X' is just another way of cheating to me.
