What is the'karma' rating next to people's names?

Hello everyone...

I am relatively new to forum life :-) and as such I am unfamiliar with the 'karma' rating next to people's names. I see that most people rank 0, whereas others range up to 9 (I haven't yet seen higher than this).

I would like to the following: what is the point of this rating, how it is assigned and who assigns it? How does it help you in a forum environment? I assume it is subjectively assigned by an individual or individuals?

I know its a random question, but I don't like seeing stuff I don't quite understand ;-)

Take care!

Nice job getting karma sorceresss ;p. I don't think karma matters much unless it's the really big scores like Annatar and Ron Lugge's scores, because otherwise you get guys like me who just stick around in their own thread (battlefleet gothic mod, in case you were curious), and pick up a lot of karma for putting in work that helps there, but not much for the community in general, while the guys sitting on giant scores tend to be popular 'pillar of the community type' guys, although some guys who earned quite a bit of karma back in beta don't have much, but oh well...

Oh, and hey SiAl0N, how's it going with AoH ingame? I'm starting to get a bit antsy for my computer to get fixed so I can game again. ./digression
