game spinoffs?

Hi

I would like to know if you considered making a Stargate version of Sins of a Solar Empire? I think it would be an extremely popular game and that this would be one of the best game conversions of a sci-fi series to video game since Star Trek Armada. I have perfect title "System Lords".

I would say "no" (actually I would shout it), because the StarGate intellectual property would be very expensive to acquire. IMHO, Sins' gameplay model is perfect for original intellectual property and an Ironclad-created universe, but trying to adapt its particular gameplay to anyone else's already-conceived story would either result in a lot of whining about it not being a perfect match, or a whole lot of changes to gameplay that would just end up breaking the magic.

People are way ahead of you. I'd suggest helping them, if you can:

As a side note, it's preferable if you check through the forums first before posting. ;p

Sorry, Retro. Not trying to usurp you or step on toes. I just figured he could use the info.

You do bring up good points, but I doubt people will listen to them. Especially the people making the Halo mods (which is likely more dangerous than a Stargate one). 'Sides, I'd say let them do what they will. It might be fun to try out a bit.

(Where'd the Edit button go? I used it this morning.) :(

Im with RB on this one, going with anything other than a unique concept these days is a recipe for disaster, for the vast majority of the time for the reasons he highlights , sins is a good game in its own merit. Im all for total conversions and such things but not if its going to cost the company dearly and when their own product has major clout

Im actually thinking of a great concept i.e world of darkness for example dealing with CCP for a future game , now while eve online is okay and I can see why some love it mixing ccp with WoD is going to be a disaster (You watch that space, disaster :) you will see, have heard it all before hehe), of proportions like D&D online, seriously those things always mess up, be creative and invest in their own unique idea , why drag older concepts in that will just cause resentment on both sides? because its a mish mash, i.e sins players and stargate . If their wasnt the whole intellectual property things then maybe but has disaster written all over it imo

JSW, that wasn't even close to my toes. :)

Just in case this wasn't known , there's a huge difference between a mod made by volunteers that is available for free (like the StarGate mod in consideration) and an actual commercial game that is sold to make money. As soon as you start getting compensated for selling someone else's idea, then you're essentially piggybacking on that company's business and stealing their potential revenues.

Many companies don't really care too much about whether people use their intellectual property for other reasons, although some will close you down quickly - Blizzard (who recently canned a free version of StarCraft) and Games Workshop (who are fiercely protective of their intellectual property) are two examples. We actually asked David Weber if we could make a Homeworld 2 mod around the Honor Harrington universe and were nicely told no.

Usually, mods are small enough projects that it's not worth the bother for the IP-owning company to ask the people making them to stop (which is why you'll see Babylon 5 games offered). But SELLING that game is an absolute no-no. IronClad would very likely be sued if they were to make a StarGate game without paying licensing fees to the company that owns the show's rights.

Regardless, people won't buy a game that has nothing in common with its branded series except a few ship models. Trying to rationalize StarGate's plot in the Sins gaming model and sell it for forty bucks would frankly be ridiculous.

Dam thats a shame, I dont see how a mod could do any harm, only good. I THINK Garrys mod started out free and now its went commercial with team fortress 2

They're making a failsauce game based on the Honorverse, so that might be a reason...

Thank you for your replies. This was my first posting ever in the internet game universe. I was hoping that maybe this posting would cause someone from Ironclad to reach out to the people who own the rights to Stargate, or to spark the interest of other Stargate fans to inquire into an RTS game of Stargate. I know there are copyright laws out there to prevent someone from taking someone elses story and making it there own and that was not my intent of my posting but merely a suggestion, in case someone from Ironclad was reading this posting. I think that Ironclad would be a great choice in making a stand alone RTS version of a Stargate game and not a conversion as I suggested in my earlier posting.
I think the fan base of Stargate would definitely love an rts version of the tv series Stargate SG-1. Who knows maybe Ironclad has already contacted the people who have the rights to Stargate and they were turned down or maybe the people with Stargate demanded too much compensation in there licensing fees. I'm not really sure how it all works but as a fan of the tv show Stargate, I would definitely buy a "Stargate" version of "Sins of a Solar Empire" game. I think that gamemakers sometimes limit there product on story lines that hardly anyone knows or maybe the gamemakers themselves are limited because they've approached shows with great fan bases but the owners of the copyrights demand to much. Never the less I think that "Sins of a Solar Empire" is a great RTS game.

Cool man :) , seems a creative idea actually its just I think the way some corporations are these days are making people wary. Its being able to trust that companies will do it correctly and so much ideas that end up as games have been all hype. I like stargate as well though :) good series! I hope of they did go that route, that they would do it right is all Im saying, not meaning to dampen anyones spirits :). There is alot they could do with this game as long as money and power doesnt make them forget about what its like for the consumer. I agree about copyright owners.

If the core gameplay is going to be the same, what the hell does it matter if it's based on a crappy show or not? Does a game instantly get better if it's using unoriginal, stolen art or something?

Judging from the number of times Star Wars and Star Trek models have been modded into just about every space-based game anywhere, I'd have to guess "Yes". :D

As part of the current Stargate mod team, I've got to say that the mod we are creating is going to be just as good as anything you would buy. We have plenty of ships for the Human side, some from the show and some based on fan and book lore and some of original design. Each, though, has ties to the Stargate universe. We are still a very small team and anyone that would like to join up and help us, it would be greatly appreciated. Good luck with it derbal! Take your time and try your best not to cut corners. Its going to be a hellish amount of work but I reckon if you stick to those rules somewhat should be great :)

Thanks. I'm not the one in charge. The guy that's in charge is Eomega or Epytron_Omega. I'm the guy that's in charge of the coding part of the mod. And you're right. It is a hellish amount of work.
