Please eliminate the Off Topic Forums from Recent Posts

About a year and a half ago we used to have quite a bit of fuss with religious and political threads. There was a fairly big push by Kryo which assumedly was at Stardock’s bequest to try and tone down these threads and the overall grief that they cause. There were requests to take such threads to Joe User and although nothing much really seemed to happen, gradually over time it seemed things quieted down.

Now suddenly, and apparently in conjunction with the restructuring of the forums, we seem to be inundated with this stuff all over again. Kryo mentioned that he wasn't even sure which site these topics are coming from.

People usually say that if you don't like it then just don't participate but that's not really a fair suggestion. These things sprout a life of their own and like a train wreck it can often be difficult to look away. I honestly and truly find most of these topics as offensive as pornography and simply wish to not have to be subjected to these threads.

This has been suggested many times before and for much the same reason as I'm repeating this suggestion now. All that would be necessary is for the Off Topic forum to be something that someone would have to explicitly select to view. When viewing https://forums.galciv2.com simply exclude the Off Topic forum from the Recent Posts lists unless that forum is selected.

I and many others like me come here to talk, and listen to others talk, about GC2. I don't mind if things like the Sins forums were mixed in with GC2, at least there is some relationship; however these religious and political threads are ridiculous. I certainly don't come here to listen to someone else's religious beliefs or to talk about what opinions or lack thereof I may hold on the subject. I couldn't care less about what someone thinks about intelligent design or any of that crap. I suggest that anyone that brings up such a subject is simply doing their best to cause grief. I'm disappointed that someone like TGE would even start such a thread, the only purpose of which is the basest level of trolling.

There is nothing good that can come from such threads only bad. So for the sake of what's left of these forums please just let's not have that stuff here.

@Uranium. I think it's a valid question and one that cannot be answered easily. Personally i know of two guys who don't come to these forums because it is cluttered by religious and political threads. Granted both these people are somewhat reserved, but even the most shy and introverted person should be able to enjoy a game site without, to them at least, offensive material.

From personal experience i have gone to sites of a particular theme before and been confronted with many off topic threads and simply not bothered. Granted had i dug a little deeper on those sites i would have easily found what i was after, but i, like many, look for the easy way out.

I'd say there are more than a few who have had a similar experience here on GC2.com.

Actually guys, we should just shut this thread down as Kryo suggested. Initially the attempt was well warrented but once Kryo made the pronouncement, the handwriting is on the wall. Continuing this thread after that point makes it as much a part of the problem as any of the general's stuff.

What ever happened to just having fun?

Now, Mumble, please just request for this to be locked. I really truely thought that all this would cease once the other thread got locked, but it just keeps going and I for one am tired of the battle. This whole situation has given me the odd feeling of having my name dragged through the mud not once, but twice.

I didn't really blame you for the other thread it was simply a bad choice of topics. I know you had no malicious intent.

The thing is that there is certainly nothing malicious or inflamatory about my simple request. The tremendous grief that was given by the opponents of this proposal is way out of proportion to the topic. There was no religion, there was no politics, there was only a simple request for a little peace and quiet.

Why then did this simple proposal elicit such a heated response? The answer is simple. This simple proposal threatened to eliminate the primary platform of the trolls of this forum and the trolls responded in spades.

Note that there was no threat of the elimination a place for the trolls to spout their trollish drivel. It was simply a request to allow the rest of us to not have to be their forced audience. That's all we asked, and with that a cry and hue was heard throughout all trolldom.

So Kryo has spoken and the OFT will not be removed from the recent post list and the trolls can continue on their merry way but that doesn't mean that the rest of us aren't fully aware of who the trolls on this forum are.

There's really no reason to lock this thread.

Of course, since the premise of the thread has been denied the thread is rather pointless but there has really been no need to lock this thread.

There is no real contention here. Like I said there is no religion and there is no politics here. There was only a request by people that use these forums legitimately to not be subjected to trolling.

The only grief comes from the obvious trolls. They are the ones that become unreasonable and start dropping fbombs and start becoming abusive. I say we keep this thread open and allow them the chance to continue the abuse and thereby give them more opportunity to be banned.
