Will have to start a game as the Korx and have a look...
Otherwise, I highly recommend you design your own ships for this. You don't have to create your own look for them, but there are templates you can use in the ship designer. You don't need to grab the stock ships first, they're all sitting in the template list as well.
That is, if you're using TA. I don't believe that the base game has the template functionality.
Im playing as the yor in my present game, and I have to go into the templates list to build defenders.
As soon as you research 'interstellar construction' or the race equivalent, you should have defenders available.
When I researched medium hulls , the small hulls were visible but no medium hulls.
This happens with some races but not all. Can't remember which.
I have tried this but it isnt cost effective.
e.g. I researched up to plasma II ( i think the beam that gives you 2 damage)
but the auto design insisted on building a defender with
8 kinetic stream IV, giving me attack 8 cost over 400 (cant remember)
I can build attack 10 using 5 plasma II at cost less than 400.
So I turned the feature off. Shame because I find desining ships a chore.
We've made some tweaks to the ship automation system...can you try playing the Kork again using the automated ship creation and see how it plays?
We want to make sure that feature is solid before release, and it sounds like you're exactly the type of player it was intended for ![]()
Ok, but that's not my point. The point is that a lot of times, I like to build up numbers of the stock ships, then upgrade their weapons and defenses in groups. This way I get a lot of cheap ships early in the game, and can easily make them more powerful later in the game. Also, I too find the task of designing ships a little cumbersome. I'm playing a new game as the Arceans now, and the same issue is happening. I have to design ships in order to have any. Some people enjoy that. I myself do not.
Ai's I'm playing against are building typical small fighteres, defenders, escorts and such as they normally do and upgrading them. Korath, Drengin, Torians, Krynn and Arceans.
Freightors and Transports showing up in my build list on schedule.
The AI would not be affected by the core ships not showing up for the player; the AI does not build the core ships, they design their own.
The core ships no longer include attack ships because these ships were designed before we had tech trees for the different races, and most of the ships are not available now to player, depending on what race you were playing. That is why we made the option to have the AI design ships for the player. I did forget to make the option on by default. The core attack ships will now only show up as free ships from random events or custom maps (including campaign and tournament maps).
If you don't find the AI designed ships effective enough, you can always upgrade them and tweak the design. There are also templates if you want more control over what goes on your ship but don't want to have to design the hull.
Designing your own ships is always going to be the most effective, but the option exists for people who would rather spend their game time doing other things than choosing what weapons, engines, etc, to go on their ships.
Yes, with the old system, core ships were tagged with techs that would unlock them. That dosent work so well when every race has different technologies.
The new system where the AI will design core ships using the tech you've unlocked is the new solution, allowing ANY techtree to result in some sort of 'core ships'.
That's correct. The only ones that would still show up would be the ships with cargo hulls, the scout, and the survey ship.
