Watch the tutorials, they are actually quite helpful.

Update the game to the latest version through Stardock Central.

Read this forum. ;)

Then read the manual.

Trying to answer a very specific question like "how do i play this thing?" is tough to do.

When you grasp the basics of the game that you can learn from the manual and the tutorials, you'll have a better direction of where to go with your questions.

I just bought it aswell  :)

Not much more than a faint clue as what to do yet. Lots of reading and trial & error ahead.

Try starting as the Humans on an easy setting. A medium map would be my recommendation. Choose 2 or 3 opponents.

Click on your colony ship and then right click Earth. That'll put your colony ship in orbit. Relaunch your colony ship and choose the maximum amount of colonists. This will be 250 for DA or 500 for DL IIRC.

Click your colony ship and right click your secondary planet (Mars). That'll send the colony ship to that planet. Congratulations! You just became an interplanetary power.

On Mars, put a factory in the queue. Leave it to its own devices for now.

Go back to Earth. Put a factory in its queue and then click on "buy". You want to do that because just buying it without putting it in the queue costs a LOT more.

Put two more factories in Earth's queue, followed by one lab and one economy structure. (I don't recall what the lower level econ structure is, but it looks sort of like a folded wallet).

If you have a miner, double click it and set it to "automate" and then forget about it for now. If you don't have a miner, you can forget about it immediately.  :)

Double click your flagship. Set it to Auto Survey. Now, you can forget about it too. As it finds goodies, it'll tell you.

Go to Earth and put a Colony Ship in the queue. Click on Purchase or Buy to rush buy one.

Go to the research screen and select the path to Impulse Drive (light blue). You'll want one of those as soon as you can. Later, you'll want the yellow techs, too.

End the turn.

Launch your new Colony ship and aim it toward a planet that has a class of 8 or above. If you don't see a planet that matches that, send the colony ship out into space blindly. It'll likely find something out there.

Buy another factory on Earth and another colony ship.

Explore and colonize. That should get you started.

More advanced stuff can be learned as you go along. Start thinking about custom ship designs (bigger engines, weapons, etc.). Keep diplomacy and morale in mind. You'll need to choose how you want the game to progress and the techs you choose will help you guide it the way you want.

Don't over extend yourself. Keep an eye on the economy. That's a major part of your empire's success.

Don't be quick to go to war. The enemy will declare on you quickly enough. Just have a plan to be ready to respond. The first time they declare war on you, they'll still be too weak to back it up. Build up quickly enough and you'll make them reconsider their rash decision.

Good luck and ask again when you have more specific questions.  :)

thanks to all who replied
but a special thank you to
MottiKhan as he took the time to
answer my question in detail.
i'll print your suggestion and
follow it. as this is not a first
person shooter it will take a long
time to learn the basics. this is like
school, haha. maybe i'll bring an apple
for the teacher. MottiKhan, i'll stay
after class to dust the erasers for ya
dude.

I don't know why everyone thinks that tutorials are the best way to go! For GC2 i did the same thing i do for every game...play and figure it out as i go. that way you can create your own strategy as you go.

Luckily i had a day off to explore the game a little....ยด

After playing a basic size game for a few hours i managed to figure out a fair bit of the basics ( i think )!

Anyway it all seems to be fairly straight forward in terms of functions & controls, though the gameplay options are not going to be quite so easy.

I quit the game finally, realising i had made too many fundamental mistakes (experimenting what things do rather than being to careful).

New game commencing soon... :HOT:

Few things i noticed...

#1 - I have no sound except in the tutorials (maybe my crappy computer though not a big deal i guess).

#2 - Ship numbering ect gets abit confusing, need to label them individually to keep track of them after a while.

#3 - This is my first 4x game and i LIKE IT! but maybe a little more patience would help.

#4 - I changed the "humans" race symbol & leaders name, though during a "chat" with another race i was being called "Alan" which almost caused me to declare war!
Also the race symbol was back to the original blue one ( after i had saved and returned to game ). Is this normal or ..?

All told, i reckon i made a good purchase  ;)  and hope to enjoy this game for a long time yet.

Lastly a question- As this is my first "turn based" game, what exactly is a "turn" referring to in regards to what should be done/ how long should it be ?
Should i wait for the "turn" light to come or whatever?
Do i just press it whenever i can`t find anything left to do?

Thanks for your help in advance.
Chris

Its always "on" to be pushed, once your computer processes the previous turn.

The turn just means when you have done everything you can or want to do (like move your ships, buy a building, pick what you want to research) you proceed to the next turn.

I will assume you've played some kind of board game, we'll say Monopoly. Once you roll the dice, move your icon, decide whether to buy a property, purchase a house or hotel, etc. you would "push the turn button". Its the same in this game, you don't HAVE to do everything, every single turn. Just do what you want, and click the button when you're ready.

One thing I've always found confusing tho, was the myriad of "empty turns"... Turns where there's nothing really to do, other than perhaps wait for a ship to finish building, wait for research, so just click end turn, end turn, end turn, end turn, etc... In Monopoly, you do some action every dice roll, but not so here. And I've always felt like I was doing something completely wrong by having so many empty turns.

if you make stuff happen, you won't have so many empty turns ;)

Set your tech speed to a higher level if you find yourself clicking turn too much. Or set stars/planets to a more abundant level so there are more planets etc. to work with.

And turn your production slider to 100% if it isnt already  ;p

You could also play on smaller maps, where things generally happen quicker. I find that on tiny or small maps, when I do NOTHING during a turn I either have wasted a turns worth of optimising (sliders, production, research) or have already won and am just waiting for the last invasion to actually take place.

I find "empty turns" to be a precious commodity, even on larger maps. There might be a handful in the beginning, but things heat up pretty quickly. Perhaps rush buying your buildings until you can build several per turn can help. Also, tech trading can be real lucrative if you do it right. Adjusting your sliders and re-focusing production/research/ship building can almost always give you an advantage per turn.

For instance, I'm playing a gigantic map game now and I might get two turns completed per day if I'm lucky. It's taking me about an hour per turn on average right now.

I'm buying/destroying/trading/attacking/adjusting something almost every turn. I'm sure that if you look for opportunities, you'll find them.

First full game on a small size map completed last night in defeat (no suprise)!

Took a few hours over the past few evenings. Enjoyed it very much and learnt alot.

Did rather well (i think) defending myself against 3 enemies for a fair while until all was lost.
Certain lack of research being the main cause, though overall i managed a decent side.

Lets see if a little more upfront planning helps next time...

im too familiar with first
person shooters. i've never
played a turn based game.
what am i doing here? what is the object
of the game? as usual the manual tells
everything about playing the game i.e.
details about what this icon means but
what the heck am i doing??

building up an economy and a fleet so you can conquer other races! ;)

Well, all of that, is giving me a big grin on the face! ;)
Believe me, in the early days of my own gameplay experiences - i too did a fairly high amount of silly & wacko weirdo stuff. Guess what, that's WHAT is fun afterall! ;)
But, thks to this place -- it was even more satisfying than i could ever imagine.
My definition of indirect MultiPlayer features, btw.

The object of the game is to win.

Things that make you win:

1) Wiping out all other civilisations (Conquest Victory).

2) Getting your sphere of Influence to cover 75% of the galaxy map (Influence Victory).

3) Establishing Alliances with all other civilisations. (Diplomatic Victory).

4) Researching all the technologies in the Technological Victory tree.

I've tried all of these and none are really as satisfying as the first option ;)

5) Collecting enough Ascension crystals to win an Ascension victory.

Probably the second hardest after conquest.

And once you get down the basics of winning, the game starts for real:

- Conquest in under 1 Year (the famous ZYW or Zero Year Win)
- Conquest in 12 turns
- Influence in 1 Year (can't be done in less AFAIK)
- Tech in 1 Year
- Tech in under 1 Year
- Score more than 10.000 points in a game
- Score more than 20.000 points in a game
- Score more than 30.000 points in a ZYW
- Break the 100.000 points barrier
- Win the game without firing a single shot
- Win the game without declaring war

The possibilities for challenges are endless, you just have to use your imagination to set yourself a goal. E.g my last goal was the 12 turn victory. Then the 12 turn on suicidal. Then 20k points in that victory. My current goal for the weekend is scoring 30k points.

Have fun!

if you are not into turned based strategy games and play more 3d shooters why did you buy this game?!?

Perhaps because it is one of the best TBS out there and he wanted to find out what it's all about?
