Crash on exit to Main Menu and "New Game"

Hi, I just installed GalCiv2:Gold. It was working fine, and then I updated to the latest version, and now...
Every time I exit a game and go to start a New game, GalCiv crashes back to Windows.

Any ideas? I can provide more information as needed.

Again, it was working fine before the update, now it's crashing every time I exit a game and start a new game, without first exiting to Windows entirely.

Thanks in advance...

I tried starting up my original copy of GalCiv2. After updating the game and the video drivers, I still get this bug as well.

I had this exact problem with DA1.80e and my NVidea GForce 8500 GT. I was informed by a developer that it was a buffer flipper crash when the textures try to reload. It sounds, at least superficially, that is what issue you are having.

Try these things first to see if they fix the problem:

Make sure all your drivers are up to date. A lot of people forget to do this simple task.

Also, make sure that you have the latest version of GCII which can be downloaded through Stardock Central if you have a registered serial number (which is either on the jewel case or you got one if you downloaded the game through SDC).

If those don't work, post a Debug.err and the developer team will usually respond within a day or two. Generally. They've been a bit busier as of late.

Best of luck!

My graphics drivers are up to date. I just installed SP1 recently, so am hoping a newer version is be released soon.

But, the problem began -after- I updated GCII (I bought GCII gold).
Before I ran all the updates for GCII, I didn't have this problem.

I'll figure out how to create a Debug.err and post one when I have a bit more time. Thanks for the advice.

Well, my Debug.err is pretty much empty:

Install switch found
GalCiv2
DLL path: D:\Games\GalCiv2\GDFGalCiv2.dll
Install directory: D:\Games\GalCiv2\
Game exe path: D:\Games\GalCiv2\GalCiv2.exe

and SmartException gives me the following error:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock/SmartException/ZippedExceptions refers to a location that is unavailable."

Seems SmartException can't recognize the folder. Is that due to the (x86) part? Any other ideas? I installed SE from Stardock Central, so couldn't specify the directory.

hmmm, thats kinda weird, the .exe file should actually be located in c:\program files\stardock\totalgaming\galciv2\

the c:\games\galciv2 should be created but thats where all the in game use files go (such as races, addons, etc)

i hope someone who knows more than me, either another player or a Dev, can help you out more

It's (x86) because I'm using 64-bit Vista. I'll uninstall SmartException and reinstalling it manually if my report was empty.

Hi, I'm still having this issue, and haven't seen a patch.

Do any of you have suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks

It's an old and known issue (which I thought got fixed in TA, but apparently not). Fortunately it's simple to work around; just restart the game if you finish one galaxy and want to start another.
