OT: MST3K

This thread is not original to me. I saw in on the Battlefront Forum, so I "liberated" the idea and brought it over. I'm hoping to start a thread not filled with controversy. :)

Any Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans in here?

The questions asked were: Who was better?

Joel or Mike?
Crow or Servo?

Favorite episode?
Favorite short?

For me it is as follows:
Joel, Crow, The Skydivers and A Date with the Family.

And I busted a gut in the Home Economics short when the narrator said "And now the most important question" (or something to that effect) to which one of the gang replied "How do pop tarts work?"

Share your MST3K moments here in joy and merriment!!

Mike.
Crow.

SPACE MUTINY!

(Ho, ho, ho.)

Hmmm... don't think I've seen all the shorts. The one with that lame animated spring comes to mind, though.

Joel... and by such a wide margin I question the validity of anyone who says Mike.

Crow

Warrior of the Lost World

Few shorts really stood out to me... they were usually good for little more than a chuckle. As it's the only one I can remember off-hand I'll go with "Let's Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas!" But anything from the Joel years is better than the Mike years.

Oops... I read "shorts" and thought skits, not the little mini movies. Too many good shorts to pick from.

Joel, you ninnies! And Crow, of course, even if they did change his voice (I think).

Haven't had cable for a few years now, so I can't remember too many, but MANOS - Hands of Fate!

"Push the button Frank."

Joel was infinitely better than Mike, although the credit skits with Mike were amusing at times.

Fugitive Alien is the all-time best, followed closely by Manos: THOF.

"Kill Ken!" "Which Ken?"
"If I have one life to live, let me live it as a Ken!"
"See? That's why you're a scummy traitor."
"Well, at least he gets to keep the swell Star Trek stuff."
"What are the specs on this thing?" "Oh, they're just bugs, they'll wash off."
"Rocky!" "AGAIN???"

and the ultimate classic line...

"He triiiiied to kill me with a forklift... Ole!"

Ahh, LOL

Manos the hands of fate was amazing!!! Easilly the best one I ever saw, though I have not seen nearly enough...

I guess I'm the only one who'd vote for Servo though... Its more or less a toss up, but for some reason I always kinda liked servo a bit more...

Oh and Joel, easy...

Can you imagine watching Manos:THOF without MST3K? I feel sorry for everyone that appeared in that one.

whichever movie that had Krankor in it... he had such a lame evil-laugh and the rail deaths were great "I still support the rail system!...."

Joel was much better.

is it still on any channel i would like to watch it.
i was so young when i saw it originally, some of the best jokes probably went over my head.

Mike sucked.

Easter Egg:

Take a VERY close look at Crow and then look at the robot that reports the news...

http://www.stardock.com/stardock/articles/galciv/new-5.jpg

It's subtle (the artists objected to having it look goofy) but that's where he came from.

its not that close...

certainly not copyright infringement

the yor should look like gum ball machines

Sheesh... so I'm sorry I said Mike already. (:( Fact is, all the episodes I've seen on the SciFi Channel are with Mike, not Joel, so I have nothing to which I can compare. So Mike blows now & then... guess I'll have to go rent a DVD or something.

Anyway, I find it hard to believe that anything will beat "Space Mutiny", though...

Joel (especially in the pre-Comedy Central ones, don't mind Mike, just mainly miss Frank and Dr Forester)

Servo

Cave Dwellers

Although I'd definitely have to give a close second to Fugitive Alien for the same reasons mentioned by tjcsavannah... Already have the "Forklift" song stuck in my head just thinking about it... :)

But Cave Dwellers and the final skit talking about the production and continuity issues... Man. "Okay, so Ator goes and kills some deer, tans their hides, and builds an annodized alluminum frame... sheesh!"

Anyone else really miss MST3K Turkey Days? Granted that spending all of Thanksgiving in front of the TV isn't the most social of things, but that was a great reason to not sleep for a day. Really loved the between skits and the promos for those...

Crow - "And eat enough turkey to knock you on your sorry, fat, Thanksgiving Day ass"
Tom - "Crow! No... no..."

Joel was my favorite and there's Manos, hands of fate. Ah a great move..heheh.

Joel.

Crow.

"Mitchell".

Though "Manos:HOF" is a close second (especially given the HST joystick controller on the SOL in the MST3K Movie).

I too miss Frand and Dr. Clayton Forrester. I mean, Bobo and Pearl are good, but Frank was just so perfectly...banal. True greatness.

And Krankor is the ultimate evil guest-appearance villain! So I gotta give props to him!

A word of advice: don't try to start a thread like this on a MST3K fan site, especially the official one (if it's still around). They had so many flame wars that started with innocuous "Who was better -- Joel or Mike?" posts that most of them now ban such posts.

That said, I'm not sure it's even fair to judge between J & M; the show was in different phases and they had different material to work with. That said, I think Joel probably had more memorable moments. It's a toss-up between Crow and Servo.

Trivia: Joel or Mike always had to carry tom Servo into the theater because Servo's operator -- I forget who it was now -- was lying on the seats at the left of the screen so as not to be seen.
:D

Oh, and "Manos" is the king, although the giant spinning turtle whose name escapes me at the moment was cool, too.

Joel, Frank, Dr. Forrester, and the bots were the best cast. Mike is OK, but the show really dropped off when Frank and then Dr. F left. I am deeply torn between which bot was best but will give Tom the edge because of his beautiful singing voice and ability to bi-locate.

I rank Pod People as my favorite episode. Not only is the movie absurd ("Trumpy would never hurt anyone!") and the riffing great, but it has (I believe) the ludicrous "Hired!" short preceeding it, and features the Reneisance Festival inflatable punching-bags skit:

Dr. F's Leather Mugmaker Bag: "Sample my wears, sir?"
TV's Frank: "Sample my fists, you community theatre reject! Thirty five dollars to get in...! "

I must say, however, that all of the other episodes mentioned are great. Manos, in particularly, fails to win my vote only because the movie is so horrifically bad that the episode can be painful to watch.

Thank you for reminding me about Krankor. :)

Biffman: Yes, Turkey Days were the BOMB. I remember burning much videotape recording those babies.. still have a few lying around as well.

And the memorable line from that was Crow saying, "Turkey fact #12. Turkeys are filled with enough l-tryptophan to knock you on your sorry Thanksgiving ass." Then Servo would say "Crow, no!"

Another Turkey Day fact from Crow was:
"Turkeys would rather run through a fence than around it. They're just.. stupid."

Then Joel had some Turkey Day fact about preheating your oven to 350 degrees, and Tom had one about the Pilgrims, and Gypsy had one where she just sat there and Tom would try and feed her her lines to no avail...

Everyone remember the episode when they finally let Gypsy participate? It was one of those Hercules movies.. Gypsy came up with one zinger ('Hey look guys, they're steam cleaning the horses!') then finally bailed on Joel and the Bots before the first commercial break.. it was hilarious.

Vynd - I'd forgotten the Renaissance skit, man that was good. :D

tcjsavannah - Yep, that's the line. Thanks for the correction, had forgotten the tryptophan part... Hee hee... :)

Yep, sure do miss TV's Frank (Sweet floppy frank) and Dr F... The skits they used to come up with were just wonderful. The excercise square to let you work on your "Shemp" area... Ah memories...
