Terran Tech Tree - how to unlock different ship designs

I am new to the game.  Is there a way to tell what prerequisites there are to get different ships?  In the tech tree a tech will list which new ship design will be unlocked when that tech is researched but sometimes it will then say more research is required but won't tell you which technologies are needed for each ship design.  Am I missing something?

I honestly don't know if that information is actually available in Dread Lords. Your best bet is to design your own ships anyway, the default designs are far inferior to anything you can come up with.

However, if you get Twilight, there is an option to have the ships designed and updated for you.

I say build your own ships... the advantage of this is you can see how well they hold up againest the enemy ships, and afterwards you can modify their states to fair better in battle. with premade ships thats not possible, you cannot modify them.

Plus most the preset ones look crap anyways, custom built ones can Look AWESOME.
