Are the pirates supposed to be this hard?

Greetings

Brand new to the GalCiv community, and liking the style of the game.  But the pirates. . .OUCH.  Now a lil info bout the game i'm playing.

enemies AI is set to fool.  Been playing the game for over 3 days.  Dang near have all the research done(and i only have 5 planets with a quality of 11 or below.  I WILL NEVER play with research set to normal, again LOL) tiny universe.  hardly any habital planets.  started out with 9 civs, now it's me and the alterians, with 2 minor races tryin to hold on.

I play like this to understand the mechanics of the game.  the manual and tutorials can only teach you so much :)

Anyhoo. at first the rats(pirates for short) were a nusiance. possibly 1 or 2 ships that's all.  Now i see fleets with over 200 freaking ships in them.  the last rat fleet, had like 1416 rating in thier missles and 1234 ratings in thier shields and armor.  they basically wiped out all my starbases in like 5 turns(i had 4 econ and 1 milit.  the econs had like 40 mods installed and the militart had over 50 moduals, and they walked through em, like nobody's business.  OUCH)

is this normal, or can i somehow make the rat AI fall under the same logistics restrictions as me(i currently have 30 logi points) I mean the rat fleet had over 70 med ships and like 7 battleships with 2 or 3 dreadnaughts, not to mention the Loads of smaller ships that had numbers like 1..

Also, I'm tryin to contact stardock, seems like that stardock download account thingy will not let me register my game.  It tells me wrong email when i reg Galciv2 or invalid reg when i try to register calciv 2 with the dark avatar expansion(bought the Calciv II dread lords gold edition W dark avatar expansion at gamestop for 38 bucks. WOOHOO)

Anyhoo just call me darq on the forums, and hopefully in a day or 2 i'll be able to register and look at some of your mods.  i'm a somewhat newb modder myself(worked with the comodities in some of the privateer mods, and a lil cosmetic modding on Jumpgate)

Cya out there folks

That sounds like the pirates Mega Event...in which you have your hands full in cleaning them out. There is a lesser pirates event out there though...so not all rats are this horrid to fight.

Well, everytime i see them event screens, i'm spending like 10 minutes and umpteen number of Large ships tryin to kill em all off :(

I bail on that pirates event. The whole map fills up with them. However, in DA, if you wipe out a race without killing their military, you can end up with a good number of them and this time they have good ships. Though, I can usually handle that one.

It's been awhile since I've seen pirates, but IIRC, they don't research or invade. So, I stop building new ships, slowly send my existing ships to enemy territory, pirates follow, wipe my ships out, then start hammering my enemy's stuff. Meanwhile I hunker down & research till I can build a better ship and fight 'em.

Darquies, what version of the game are you playing?

What you are describing soumds a lot like how pirates were in DL 1.0.

Greets Gents.

Let me give ya an update here.

first off, I was only playing GalCiv II, no dark avatar. Bought the game at Gamestop and they gave me the wrong freaking disk LOL.

So with that and the fact i couldn't register, i'm thinking it's prolly the dl 1.0

Now on to new questions.

Got Dark Avatar today, re installed it, and It looks Sweet. gonna take it for a spin and see what i can learn. I was playing a tiny galaxy and was doing pretty good but got wiped out by the arcians. funny thing there, they had 4 24 pt frigates and they ate my dreadnaught(and i had a Doom Laser) not sure how that happened. but It's prolly my fault. I'm really a newb at this game, but if i keep pluggin, i'm sure i'll start getin the hang of it. Speaking of newbs. I'm still having trouble registering my game. Of course my reg code has 30 digits(not 28 that everybody else has) I have contacted support, and awaiting thier reply. in the mean time, if any of you Vets out there wanna throw me some pointers, Please do.

thanx m8's

Did you buy a new or used copy?

I love that event. I just get rid of my military and switch to getting tech. The pirates blow up your enemies' fleets as well, so you're not in too much danger. If you have good enough engines, you can let the priates do the work for you as well. Just make fast transports and rush enemy worlds when the pirates take out all their defenders.

The Arceans superability is super warrior, i think its called that. It means that if they attack you and they have enough firepower to kill your ships, then you won't get to fire back at all, regardless of your weapons. If you attack them, their superability doesn't apply.

I can't tell you about the number of digits, but if you are playing a used game and the previous owner registered it, you won't be able to.

I was wondering that as well. But i as well have the same super ability. So that's where I'm coming up confused and such. i mean thier firepower was in the 300's so i had a pretty good feeling that my precurser rangers couldn't take a blast like that, heck prolly not even my dreadnaught. but when i had a attack laser rating off 110, and they had no laser defences, i thought for sure i would kill all 4 frigates. But after my dread hit em, i only caused like 5 to 15 pts of dmg(my game pretty much ended there, and i'm playing another on sub-normal int. looks like i'm not ready for normal int.)

then again it could be my playing style. I am not an aggressive player. I prefer to grab the planets that are around me, and set up the defenders and my starbases and retaliate, not really provoke.

I recently purchased the gold edition from GameStop. I went through many gamestops to find it. The first few had the game, but the seal was broken. I asked the sales person if I could look inside and they let me. In most cases the inside was gutted - no CD, no manual just an ad sheet. Theyc hecked the back and told me they sometimes take the contents out for display purposes, but no dice.
I finally found one in a store that was till sealed.

Seriously, in on mall someone gutted all copies in three stores. Must be a great game to get stolen so much!

What does Super Warrior have to do with Pirates? The Pirates usually go high on Defense anyway, so Super Warrior won't be too useful against them unless you have very high-end optimized weaponry. And they are the ones who come with fully optimized ships, not you.

If you live close to Chicago, then you prolly got hit by the same bunch as me. If not, then GameStop Sucks. Speaking of Gamestop, I had to drive all the way back to get the correct copy. And they didn't give me any compensation. they even said they were at fault. Sheesh, with gas at 3.25 a gal, and i'm in BFE that really pissed me off

Since you stated you couldn't update the DA game, you very likely got hit by so called "off-type defense bug", that was rampant in older versions of the DA. What that bug did is in short: wrong defenses never depleted and were in fact BETTER than right (on-type) defenses. So if arceans' ships had significant number of non-shields defenses, that's what happened.

For more info I suggest you check GalCiv-2 wiki. A lot of game workings is explained there.

It is very easy to re-shrinkwrap something.
