Trade as a pacifier

How effective do you find having trade routes with the AI's to keep them from declaring war on you? I haven't been using trade for several games now, but IIRC having trade routes going with AI's didn't stop them from attacking me. What do you say?

Trade gives big relations bonuses between you and your trading partners. You still need a military otherwise they will attack you anyway.

Trade is huge. Not only does it make them less likely to attack you, but it also makes others much more likely to come to your aid (the bad guys blowing up your freighters makes the other races lose money as well).
