Try GIMP. And a 'please' couldn't hurt. ;)

Although there is about as much solutions to creating Logos as there is people able to simply draw on papersheets, i found this little gem the other day while perusing into the realm of curiosity for some alternate dedicated Logo tools...

GreenBox

May not be suitable for what you need but if anything it should give you an idea about what kind of work is involved and which software features should be considered essential for efficient creativity.

I prefer regular drawing packages such as PSPro or Photoshop for the familiarity of interface and available options (incl-Plugins)... but that's only me.

Unless you're already using high-end GDI and have become comfortable with the tasking patterns, you'd be better exploring the process with stuff like i've suggested above. Simply Google-out the term "Logos making" and you'll be surprised on how many other things you may just find about this very subject.

GIMP actually works close enough to Photoshop. I used the Adobe package a long time but recently switched to more free software instead of shelling out insane amounts of money for each update.

And if you're completely new to the whole graphic editing, it makes no difference, as you're not used to anything yet.

GIMP also sports a large amount of available plugins and filters - together with the potential of writing your own python scripts, it can be quite powerful. (Note that I have yet to get python-fu running on my Vista machine... So maybe stick to the default filters in the beginning. ;) )

True, Filterings capacity do take huge chunks off the editing part for whatever tasks you must perform. Plugins (even if scripted through Python & what else) are what makes a finished product better if only, exactly as intended.
Skills vs Talent is a different issue altogether which i won't get into with this post.

I also use GIMP at times for some specific 'projects'... mostly for SVG files or when i need extra special kinds of brushes not found (exactly as) anywhere else.

Layers, Alpha Channel, bitmapping/vectoring, resolution/pallet - the trick is to control what you need in a software which does it all. Drawing is a pretty standard form of art - computerized automation expands it beyond the handful of pens & colors.
And yet, there's still 3D to consider; Perspective and modeling.

The engine is a human brain, though.

For myself i use PSP8 as i like the setup, however programs such as Paint.net (free download and use) can offer nearly as much for a new designer as can the costly mainstream alternatives. You may not get as good a job as the paid-for programs but you should be able to get a fairly good result.

Good luck and let us know if yo uhave any questions on layering, alpha channels etc as i am sure we will all help you as much as possible :D

The details will vary depending on what software you're using, but generally speaking, you'll:

- Open the square image.
- It will probably be on a "background" layer. You will need to convert it into a "normal" layer.
- Find the selection tool and set it to circular mode. Select the circle you want to be the logo.
- Invert the selection, then delete.
- Save as a 24-bit PNG image.

I use Ulead PhotoImpact 7 for logos. I find it is a better system than GIMP, which I use for Normal maps.

It has a nice icon driven interface, which I find GIMP really lacks.. I hate trying to use GIMPS layering function etc...

When you select an alpha mask in UP7, it places a misty overlay onto the image. Anything you "paint" with Black, will become clear, which is what will show up in game. Very simple.
