Year Zero Club

Year Zero Club

...when simply winning is not enough!

First off, I couldn't have done this without the inspiration of the Metaverse League and Wyndstar in particular. Kudos to the master!

Now to the matter at hand.

I finally did it. A year zero win! Granted, it was only against 1 AI and on challenging (my current level) but I'm certain that 'tough' wouldn't have been much harder. On the other hand, it was my first attempt at an 'all-labs' and 'lease instead of buy' approach, so I consider myself proud that I could do it at all.

Here is the link to the character, as a proof: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=player&id=14517

For all of you, who like me thought that year zero wins are nigh impossible: Try it! Read the posts about it! It is difficult, requires constant micromanagement, but I found it incredibly rewarding to see that victory screen after 25 - 30 turns. Not the way I'd like to play constantly, but as a change of pace, it's a incredible challenge.

And of course, once you've accomplished your first 'Year Zero', post here and rejoice!

As an edit, I now include the current top score.

Attention new players!
Do not be frightened by these scores! Playing a ZYW is actually really easy, and getting a score close to 30000 points takes just a few tries. These games are usually finished in less than 20 minutes, so have at it. Try the tiny ZYWs first, I find them easier and you might get the unique chance to beat players like neilo or Wyndstar.

Current ZYW record holders:

'expert' ZYW - Gigantic

1) 198450 points - MottiKhan

2) 119000 points - Kzinti Patriarch

3) 109500 points - neilo

'classic' ZYW - Tiny

1) 56700points - MottiKhan

2) 40600 points - Kzinti Patriarch / Magnumaniac

3) 38850 points - Wyndstar

Hey KP, is that something new I see there in the medals ~squints~

Do you guys see medals? At all?

I thought they were gone from the forums. I only see medals if i go to the Metaverse listings. I see none here on the forums.

SInce i'm on the off-topic, does anyone else have the problem with clicking to see someone else's profile only to be brought to your own?
If you are using IE, you cant see medals. At work I cant see them with IE, but at home where I switched to Firefox I can.

For viewing Metaverse profiles, it's been broken like that for quite a while. But, if you copy and paste their member number onto the end of the URL you can see their profile instead of yours.

Thanks,

Now why thje heck does using IE matter since i used to see my medals? I just though they were gone for some temporary reason.

It had something to do with one of the forum updates, and they havent fixed it yet. Maybe they arent going to fix t?

It's part of the worldwide conspiracy to get everyone to dump IE and switch to the better and faster FF.....

And yes...i am happily apart of this, i have not used IE for around 7 years now, and i have never looked back.... :D

The sole reason of existence for IE is so we can download FF. :D

And get windows updates :/

Why does one need IE to get windows updates? Am i missing something?
I'm not sure if the built-in windows update program A) gets everything or B) requires IE really. I haven't been brave enough to try and eliminate IE from my pc to find out.

I do unfortunately have some bills I pay that must be done via IE...Thus the other reason I still have it :/

So...back to ZYW talk.

I'd only assume that also taking out as many minors as you can would boost your score in the military aspect, am I safe to assume such?

No - assuming you are using spore, the only score boost would be from the extra research points, and would be very small unless you happened on a minor with research buildings on pre-cursor library tiles.

A spore attack will leave the planet with zero population (so no social score increase), therefore zero income (and no economy score increase). Military score is purely the sum of attack and defense values of all your ships, plus 1/10th of hit point totals IIRC. Ships killed / lost, invasions and soldier kills have no effect on score at all.

Certainly take them out if your economy can handle it, in the hope of getting some additional bonus tiles. However, if your economy can handle it, and it isn't because you got lucky on anomalies... then you are not maximising the use of your existing worlds for research output.

I don't know about needing it to get Windows updates, but I do know that, in order to play Metaverse games, I need to have "Work Offline" not selected in IE. It's somewhat annoying. If FF is my default browser, and AIM and Guild Wars can work with IE working offline, then why can't GalCiv2, Hellgate London, or AIM Buddy Infos work with IE working offline? (Actually, I know why the buddy infos won't work. It's because AOL got greedy and started putting Ads in peoples' buddy infos, which need to be loaded with IE.)

I can understand that some people will say "Just leave IE online," which generally would make logical sense, but my computer got infected awhile ago. I thought I had it all fixed, but then turned IE back on, only to get popups up the Wazoo. I'm pretty sure I've got everything fixed now, but I'm not entirely sure, so no entering banking info on this computer, and I prefer to keep IE off since that's what staved off the popups before.

Ok, I won't bother them then, unless I need to extend my range real quick and have an extra spore (unlikely).

I normally run the red line with my economy. Some games I'll have to hit Turn while under -500 but I often either get lucky with anomalies that turn, or the minors finally free back up to sell to. Excess money aka not spending enough isn't an issue with me that's for sure. Keeping above -500 is often my nail-biter.

Unfortunately, like it or not, IE is an integral part of the Windows OS - so you are stuck with it!

I have no doubts about the relative merits of alternative browsers, and also no doubts about the potential security flaws in them, as well as in IE. As such, I decide to stick with having just one source of potential security flaws on my system.

Popups can be controlled as easily with IE as with any browser, but if you get an infection that has caused the problems you decribe; then the only safe thing to do is wipe and re-install from scratch - regardless of the browser you use.

Ironically, the only site I regularly visit that does not work 100% with IE6 is this one  ;)

Hrm, first Gigantic ZYW was 58100 on June 8th.

I need to be closer to them or something...that was rough getting there in time. Even after trying to focus on engines.

Nicely done Freeman. :CONGRAT:

For gigantic ZYWs you do unfortunately need to CTRL-N to get a setup where you are close enough to them. My rule of thumb is if they are in your current ship range, or close to it, then its close enough.

ya i had to learn that over time.
but close or not as long as my Section31 spore ships can reach there targets then i am fine.

May 1st this time, 60900. Long ways to go yet. They were just on the edge of my beginning ship range.
