How does the AI determin which ship to fire upon in a fleet?

I have heard of a formula where it is (sum of weapons)/(sum of defenses + HP left). The ship with the highest of that ratio will be primary target for the AI ship.

I don't know if that formula is true. If not, what is the real formula? Also, now that we have Zalon and Xalax stuff, how does that count in?

The formula is correct, however there are some 'fudge factors' for the new TA components to boost chance of ships with those parts to be attacked earlier. The specifics of those modifiers haven't been posted.

I must confess I would prefer if the targetting worked somewhat differently; i.e. every ships targets an untargetted ship until all have at least one target, and only then does doubling up occur.

With a few additions... unarmed ships not targeted until all armed ones are dead, and perhaps allow focused targeting as a civ ability, researched technology or ship component.

I can't help but feel this would remove some of the abuses of the current system and enhance the importance of defence.

Then again; it's not a big deal.
