Change to Forum Format

The default font is a little small for me.  Is that something I can change on my end?

FWIW, I don't think the medals look very good with a white background.

the mouse wheel works differently now. i used to be able to click on it to bring up a rapid scroll arrow, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. the home, end, page up, and page down keys don't seem to work anymore either, or not consistently. i have to click on the frame of the window before i can use any of those functions the way i can on any other website (forum or not). using MSIE 7. thanks.

Also last I heard Brad mention, which was close to a year ago, that this would be the last metaverse that any of his games would have. Again this thought is rather bleak as well. I mean GC2 is a great game and all but without the forums and the metaverse it's far less than with them.Certainly all good things come to an end and at some point you need to move on. I'm just hoping that there will be something to move on to when the time comes.

No Metaverse for GalCiv3? That would cetainly take away a significant potion of the appeal for a lot of people. Being able to (indrectly) compete with other players, and to be a member in or run an empire adds quite a bit to the game in my opinion. I think having a metaverse for GalCiv3 would be a wise choice.

That said, I am really looking forward to the fantasy TBS/MoM remake!

Following that in a couple more years, GC3.

Years? Say it ain't so.

I did see the reference to the "4X fantasy strategy game which will be turn-based and have turn-based tactical battles and support multiplayer" in Frogboy's Drengin Digest. Being an old Ultima I-IV player I could possibly dig that.

I could even be coaxed to try out Sins but RTS was never my forte. Do I need a joystick? I don't think I've played with a joystick for over 25 years or so.

I guess I'm hoping that the Metaverse will continue somewhere, somehow because that has been a major point of interest to me and perhaps others as well.

That would definitely be a IE7 issue or something on your end itself as FF is doing that fine post new forums.

Just for 'fun' have you already tried clearing your internet cache so that the forum would be able to do a real good reload of all the data? I remember the forums looked different Monday morning, but after I cleared my cache and came back here things looked better. Perhaps something from the old forum and the code for the new are conflicting for you?

One more small quirk. In FF 2.0 the bling square for difficulty shows up, but it's not filled with anything...

just tried cleaning out my entire history to no luck. i'll buy that it's an IE7 thing (lord knows i don't trust MS to do anything right), except...

-it never used to behave that way before the forum changes
-it doesn't work that way on other forums

if no one else is getting this quirk, it leads me to suspect it's the combination of IE7 and the way the galciv2 forums are programmed. in either repsect it's worth bringing up, unless they've intentionally disabled these basic UI features for IE7 users.

I just tried it out in IE7 as well (was trying to put off loading that thing up for another few weeks) and got the same bug with the fast scroll. So we've eliminated "it's just you" out of the equation.

Argh. It's adblock plus that's doing it. Apparently the difficulty level looks a lot like an add! ;)

The fantasy TBS game is up next.

Personally speaking, I tend to avoid things with "fantasy" anywhere in the description. I generally don't read fantasy titles or watch fantasy movies. Conversely, I really go for anything involving space travel making GC2's theme attractive to me. I'll be interested in a GC3, assuming it has a similar theme.

I would think any feature requests or improvements made in this forum could be directly applied to a "GC3" site.

thanks, i feel better now :D i'm back at home and i've narrowed the bug (or "quirk" if you will) down a bit more. the fast scroll will work if you click w/ your mouse wheel outside of the forum, uh, boxes (not sure what the technical term is). the page up/ pdown/ home/ end functions will also work if i click on the "dead space" on either side, but if i click once on the actual website content, *poof* no more fast scroll functionality.

(i knew there was some trick to it like this, but when i was posting earlier today i was at work, where i keep my monitor in portrait at 1024x1280, so the forums barely fit across a window... now i'm at home and have plenty of room for dead space on my widescreen).

Anyone else finding that pinned posts aren't showing up in Opera? They work for me in IE but clicking on the +/- sign in Opera does nothing.

I dont know if this is related to the forum changes, but with my PMs the message count was off by 10. It showed me as having 10 more than I actually did. Clicking "empty all folders" deleted everything successfuly, including the phantom messages.

I reproduced this problem, latest Opera, latest IE.

Anybody else remember HTML as this great idea for interoperability? Ten thousand curses on the Browser Warriors, one and all.

I really don't like the new forums everything seems cluttered and small. I own a 19inch wide screen and as like others i have 3" of black screen on each side with the forum kinda cramed in the middle. I guess what im trying to say is, if it aint broke dont fix it (:(

Not going to the last page in a thread, and apparent forum gremlin hijacking of "view all recent posts" on many instances are the two irksome changes. Overall I understand it was a lot of work, and I know Brad made mention before you implemented it that "so of course, everyone will hate it". Sometimes familiarity doesn't breed contempt.

As for TA being the end of the road for GC2, its not the first time I've seen this mentioned, but maybe we should start a different thread to really talk about it. My guess is that the "tail" for very active membership will last about a year after release, and then slowly diminish to just a very few dedicated people. All good things come to an end. Hey, we will always have this great game to waste our time!

As for Mumble's remark on how long till GC3, in How radical should expansion packs get? Brad mentions that a "best case" scenario for GC3 would be 2010, and I think that is... highly optimistic. Realities of development being what they are, 3 years is probably the soonest we can realistically expect the next in the series, and maybe longer depending on how much they implement in the next one. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. Will be interesting who is still around when that gets released.

I know the Metaverse left a bad taste in several of the developer's mouths... even fairly early on in the life of DL... score exploits, screaming over minor building tweaks, etc. Its hard as a developer to want to put up with. All that taken into account (and as a proud member of the MetaVerse Council) I would hate to see the MV go. I've never been close to the highest scoring player given my play style (map size), but learning to play for score as well as the win added a second layer of challenge when I might have otherwise decided to shelve the title.

Actually, I have Opera 9.20 and have found there is an issue with the +/- signs, but it is not that they don't work; they just behave oddly. we see the forum like this:

+/- Pinned Posts header
+/- Recent Posts header
All recent posts in Chronological order
All Pinned posts in reverse Chronological order

The Pinned posts are at teh Bottem of teh page! Furthermore, there is no separation between the recent posts and pinned posts. It appears as one big list. From the design, I was expecting it to look like this (or somethign similar):

+/- Pinned posts header
All Pinned posts in Order
+/- Recent Post header
All recent posts in order

Which way is it supposed to look?

Are you sure about the pinned posts showing up at the bottom etc? I think it's just that pinned posts are showing up in recent posts if they've been updated. Like they should have all along. I don't really mind not having the stickies show up, they shouldn't be included separately with the new posts anyway if they haven't been updated. I wish there was an feature (like every other forum has) to go to new posts for a given forum, and see only the new posts. Not the stickies, and not the recent posts I've already read. If I mark something as read, I don't want it cluttering up the screen next time I view new posts.

I wonder if there has been a reduction in activity on the forums after the changes. Personally I find them less functional overall than before the upgrade, and aggravating enough to make me want to use them only as much as I "need" to.

Speaking only for myself, I'm not spending less time per day here on the forum, but because I do have a limited time for forum surfing, and because the efficiency has gone way down, I'm not reading as many posts or interacting as much. Here's why... just to reiterate problems mentioned in this thread:

The VLINK color is set the same as LINK color, so on the index page I can't tell which threads I've already read. That's a major time-waster. I have to either track the post times on the right, or just see if there's a new post in a thread by trial and error.

The forum no longer sends me to the newest unread post (and to the last unread page, if it's a multi-page thread). That makes me less interested in reading posts that go over one page, since it requires extra mouse clicks to find the last place I left off reading. It's doubly annoying because the index of messages doesn't indicate when it's a multi-page thread, and there's no shortcut link to the last page in a thread.

Finally, I have to manually increase the font size with Ctrl+ (in Firefox), since they're now using this tiny font, and I have to make sure I'm not applying that to other sites, just this one. If the devs actually like this new font size, then they must be using awfully low screen resolutions.

Unfortunately my free time didn't automatically increase to compensate for all this new inefficiency. So I'm reading less, posting less, and looking mainly for basic info (like when the next beta update is due). I'm hoping the person(s) in charge of the forum are just busy with other things at the moment, and these changes aren't intentional or permanent.

Both differentiation of read/unread threads, and on-index pagination with "last" links (as most forums have) are on the list to be added shortly. As was noted in the initial announcement, the forum is just operating with reduced features to make sure the base is solid before adding things back in. I'd like them back as soon as possible myself because not having them makes my job rather a pain.

I can imagine.

How about the png alpha transparancy issue as demonstrated by the white background for medals and the real pain in the butt which are all these "operation aborted" errors. A single edit of my reply turns into the following sequence.

Edit reply throwing me back to page 1.

Getting operation aborted and going to page unavailable.

Hitting "back" on my browser to get back to page one.

Scroll to bottom of OP to get to page jump links.

Jump to last page getting another operation aborted.

Hitting "back" on my browser to get back to last page.

Scroll to end of last page to my reply.

Read last edit to see if need to repeat process.

If so edit reply and repeat entire process.
End of quote

You can see how painful this can get. :)

[edit] I added the picture of my medals to show an example and I couldn't use Ctrl-V to paste it in. I had to type in http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8290/medalsse0.jpg by hand. Another pain. [/edit]

Kryo, thanks for the update! On the upside, the server speed does seem MUCH faster now. No more "tabbing away" to read other sites while waiting for a post to load. I don't know if that's a hardware/bandwidth or software upgrade, but whatever it is, it's working very well.

The web team should check out the following thread https://forums.galciv2.com/post.aspx?postid=167924&p=11.

Starting with reply #267 which seems to have a {quote} tag that is not terminated with a {/quote} tag.

This seems to result in the following replies being considered as part of reply #267.

In any case regardless of the cause suddenly that thread has an "extra" indentation along the left edge of the thread that appears to be permanent. I tried editing my reply to start with a close quote tag but that didn't do anything.

Is this something Kryo may be able to fix? Perhaps simply adding the end quote tag in reply #267 could restore the thread.

This morning, the My Replies links seems loop back to whatever page you are already viewing. I tried two threads and the Recent list, in Opera and FireFox. This is fairly vexing, especially b/c we still can't get formatting for "read that already."
