Captain Jack Sparrow Captain Jack Sparrow

G.R.O.S.S. communication thread.

G.R.O.S.S. communication thread.

Cringe in fear do gooders. The G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy alienS) empire is now formed. In less than an hour we have jumped 95 other Pacifist Doo Gooder victim empires and lept into 40th out of 135 ranked.

We are an evil empire bent on controlling everything and showing all the other empires out there who's boss. US. Are you listening Euro-"Oh lets let everyone be a senator and give em a vote doo gooder democracy alliance?" We come for you.

For a limited time, (untill I decide otherwise) 5 Pure Evil games, (or just impressing me with your game evilness) submitted will get you a Senatorship. Later, being the evil empire pyramid scheme we are, it will take 10. Of course, being the evil empire we are, that gives you no benefits, no pay, but all the alien carnage you crave most.

Now we do realize that sometimes, you just have to fake being good. You sometimes just have to infiltrate that pacifist party. We understand. But we aren't a kinder gentler empire and don't let their pacifism go to your head. And just sometimes, you gotta let the Aliens live (where else would you find slaves for the heavy metal lava mines?)

In the future, we shall update each other in the empire via this thread, brag of our conquests, drink blood wine, and generally just poke fun (creatively and humorously) at those players whom we find to be too goody goodyish.

Our mottos.

G.R.O.S.S. Where being good is merely a temporary strategy.

Just win baby.

Here's your ration of skin you do gooder wimp Drengin slime. Now get back to work

EBZeroMatrix you have been made a senator.

I repeat. Cringe in fear, we come for you.

Oh dear. Looks like the ship stalled. We're sitting ducks until everyone else's scores get redone, unless we all get out and push a lot harder. I can't play that fast!

Cap'n, she cannot take anymore!
I don't care, Scotty! Give me warp 8 now!
Warp 7.7...
Warp 7.8 (rattle rattle)...
Warp 7.9 (heavy shaking and the lights dim)...
Cap'n, she's falling apart!!!

To be continued...

Yeah, my score is now significantly lower. My game which was 2000 i think is now 500. :( Probably b/c i play 1.02. I guess 1.04 will have higher score? 1.04 seems interesting but there isn't alot of really 'new' things...surprised it took so long to release. I guess it's b/c of the testing that had to be done. I look forward to the expansion pack.

Snuis, you are empireless. Comeon and join G.R.O.S.S.

the 1.02 games got tagged the most. The E-a fell out of first because of it. That was the source of some of their high scores. 1.31 was also a score booster. So I'll probably take a hit there.

Gerakin: Pour it on Scotty!!!! Pour it on!!!!! We'll catch those Romulans yet. Dang why did the Klingons ever give them warp drive.

Interesting..assuming I can keep my eyes open when I et home tonight I will start a game on much harder difficulty than I have been playing, will see how I go - why do you prefer clusters over evenly spread?
End of quote

I have found that when I take the speed +2, (I got taking the bonus Idea from staffa) I find it easier to get more planets If I play tight clusters gigantic abundent. But once the game starts I look for a decent size starting cluster, with more scattered smaller clusters. rather than large ones as most do. I go for the speed/range tech's first. Note: if I meet someone in the meantime, I can always go for the uni translater in between with no prob. I usually do now anyway about 3rd tech in to get the Diplomacy wonder.

The Puter civs just do not react well to a total speed/Range disadvantage in this type galaxy. Most end up stuck in their starting clusters longer. Routinely, they end up with 10 or 11 extra colony ships each that by the time they get range, I've taken it and they simply have to turn around. Also, If I get boxed in (one time both nearest clusters to me were occupied.) Instead of quitting or settling in their clusters and hope to out culture duke em early, (Not an easy task during the colony rush when you cannot keep up in population) like most would have to, one well placed starbase allows me to leapfrog their entire civilization and beat them to the next cluster (By then the first range tech has got me Gravity accelerateors for speed +2. With the +2 to start, and the +1 that I've already researched. My Colony ships are at speed 7. theirs are sitting at 2 or 3. So while they were filling in their original cluster and are now ready to go to the next. I've already got it all covered. Also it keeps their influence away from your stars for a time. unlike when you have fewer larger clusters. That allows me to get a good foothold. It also leaves their clusters vulnerable to late game culture bombs.

I figure the program gets changed to stop what most others do. Therefore, if I find a different path that works for me, it won't get changed to stop what I do as much. Unfortunately, I can't run up pop for the big scores as my game crashes. So I have to take steps to limit it to about 4 trill. I could easily run it up to 8 or 10 but I'd never be able to get the game finished due to crashing. But it looks as if that's being changed.

Thanks for the manual recompute, Staffa. Was wondering what kind of ride I'll be taking once I submit my next game.

You should most definitely update and play 1.04. Stardock has thrown down the gauntlet to Incredible players by upping its difficulty.

U made me wish for my student days where I could game more. :)

I can confirm the score nerfing, my latest 1.02 game (and my last) had a score of 2100 on painful. Metaverse shows 500 something. :( :( This sucks! This was a difficult game for me in which I just trounced the bugs. I ended up with 100k bc, that was cool, hehe.
Scotty Scotty!!!! Did you alow Wrong way Feldman to work on that warp drive again!!!!! I said Warp 6 forward.!!!!

Rob go to stardock central and download 1.04 if you can soon as you've submitted your games. It will all even out. Everyone is gonna drop.

Captain, the aliens have trapped us in a form of inverted tractor beam. They are using a repulsor beam.

Spock, I don't care what they are using, find us a weak point!

Captain, our phasers and photon torpedoes are useless. The same repulsor technology also powers their shield.

Scotty, I need more power!

Cap'n, we cannot break free. We're just burnin' the dilithium crsytals out.

To be continued, still...

I always pick speed 2 for big games as well.

1.04 has made some tweaks (not always sensible3) to the game which will change some "standard" game winning tactics a bit.

The main one I noticed is that trade goods are more expensive to buy and worth significantly less to sell to other civs (like I could sell tranlators to minors for 27 BC for zero months playing on "tough").

Good. I'm gonna finish up this last hanging 1.035 then download 1.04.

Seems like Brad overdid the TG nerfing. It was suppposed to only thwart the higher levels.

Hmm... unless he considers everything above normal to be higher levels.

Yup. From what people have sad Ray, I'd have to conclude that as well. That's why I suggested doubling or trippling the rush buy price only on those items and leaving everything else (including the base production cost) alone and see what it does first.

But a change in rules is merely a change in strategy. This remains a power game. Be it cultural, scientific, or military. And he who has it. Wins. You should join our empire Ray. HEHE. I gotta finish up my last 3.5, then download 4. See what it has.

I preferred the "eliminate purchasing of trade goods" suggestion..I suspect it was a slighly harder programming fix than (presumably) just going into a table and changing some values

Well, I am about halfway through a masochistic
gigantic abudant game and I have passed critical mass
I am doing most of the research I have the vast
majority of the pop and the aliens are being
culturally flipped.

My econ has been strong enough for awhile for me to
just gobble up any wonders/trade through purchase I
want, its more expensive but again after awhile
its still fairly cheap.

I lost a lot of early tradegoods I normally get, BUT
and here is a positive. Tradegoods that you fail to
get are just as cheap to get in trade as they would
be to trade. I can ussualy get a tradegoods for a
single tech, so its not all bad.

So I just skip tradegoods I dont care if the AI ends up
with and just get the ones I DONT want the AI to get.

Ive only failed so far on one of the research ones
and galatic stock exchange, which was way to early for
me to get :(

It seems to me that the secret to winning maso now, or
at least the easiest way is to find minor civs to trade
with. You cant trade with majors cause they always
will be ahead of u early on. But if you get a couple
minors you can trade back and forth between them until
you get something the majors dont have, and then you
just cycle up again. Also having the alexians near you
helps ALOT(the minor civ that will trade cash for techs).
With a 1000 cash from the Alexians early on I purchased
Diplomatic translators the hard way
Also, each AI starts off with like 5000 credits, but if they
end up spending them pretty quickly on their expansion, they
dont have much left over to purchase wonders either, while
they do on occasion get one very fast(I think if they get stuck
in a corner and cant expand they end up buying a wonder)
but in general they are much slower about getting wonders too
now, so it is concievable to build them, though its really scary
to be 90% of the way there and then have some major finish it.
Anyway, few more hours and I will see what a maso
gigantic is worth on 1.04:)

Keep on keeping on Staffa. You and about 4 others of us will actually see your scores go up. The rest of us not updated.. Poof. But it's a one time hit and eventually, it's gonna hit everyone anyway. I'm trying to wrap up a 3.5 then gonna get 4. I'm gonna push the pop envelope a bit and see if the crashing gets any worse. It goes from zero crashing at 3, to a teeny bit at 3.5 to an annoyance at 4. I successfully reconfigured some things on my machine so at least I can load a game with 4 trill pop now. Takes 5 or 6 minutes. But it will load. So I'm gonna push this one to 5 and see what happens. Tonight I'm gonna buy another 128 mg dimm and see if upping my ram to 256mg helps a bit. Ram is so cheap now it will cost me about $20.

Finish those old games under the old version first! While I do not know if this is just my bug or what, none of my 1.03A games load under 1.04! I even reinstalled from CD to get a fresh 1.0 and Stardocked back up to 1.04. No dice. So, I can either call it a loss and start anew, or bust back down with another reinstall back to the old version to finish my other game. Remember, it's not paranoia if the bugs really do bite you!

Grats on getting back to No 1 Staffa!!

Possibly for a bit longer this time as they seem to have done at least the top 25 scores (are they doing these manually for chrissake?)

So Squash a beetle today for the cause. And a good point. Finish your outstanding games first, then upgrade.

Look out the Port side G.R.O.S.S. ers. Did you see that? That was the shoot club being drawn into the dev gravity well of score doom. Keep those engines at full Scotty. Emergency Warp.

Any ideas on best way for higher score on 1.04? Or is the same stuff as in previous versions, just everything is nerfed quite a bit?

Don't know yet Rob. Staffa's playing his first as we speak. I'm still finishing my 1.3a game up, then I will submit, then I will get 1.04. But we'll learn as we go.

OK, boss. Emergency power it is. Sorry I am a bit late, had to borrow the transporters to raid the enemy a bit. Er, what's that? About the bandana and two flashlights I am wearing? Uh, never mind that. I'll be back in regulation uniform in no time at all.

Anyway, when I get the chance I will try to revive my old game. Until then, don't fear the Score Reaper. Let the other empires who haven't felt the full effect fear the Reaper instead. When their heavyweights fall, the ground will shake and GROSS will be returned to its rightful place.
