How do I improve my diplomacy with other races?

Im having a hard time developing relations with other races. I have tried giving them stuff, trade and those things. Am I missing something? Or is it a combination of those two things that should work?

I find myself with neutral, wary and at war with all races all the time.

what about research some diplomatic technology? That will always help. But if you just wanna give stuff to AIs to make them happy.....you have to give them really much. Ive tried give 30 BattleAxe at one time, and that only raise the relationship to Friendly.

I usually try and get all the communacation techs right off the bat. But when I contact them Im not able to do much with them. Does it take alot to improve relations with them and I just need to keep trying?

Ive only tried up to bright level AIs, usually, if your military power is too low, no matter they are happy with you or not, they will try to rip you off with anything you have. And also, doing trade with them will also improve their thoughts towards you. Dont rush at the beginning, it doesnt matter that much.

Doing smaller amounts, constantly, over a long period of time, tends to work better. Things like profitable trade routes and such seem to have a better long term effect than throwing a couple of battleaxes their way, for instance.

Having them depend on you is the best way, establish trade route with the ones you want to..umm suck up to :P once there econ is about 15-20% dependant on you they will do anything you ask..inculding ally with you if you have that tech

Remember that Good civs will never get on with Evil ones.
